Definitely not River, sorry.

John, very underused. As to 'chavvy and try hard', you do get some right berks on here. Imagine trying hard when naming your baby.

You don't understand the concept of 'too try hard'.

Saying a name is ‘try hard’ is witless, Lippy. It’s a stupid thing to say, Lippy. A vacant thing to say, Lippy.

morelippy · 30/07/2023 21:32

If you say so 🙄

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/07/2023 21:46

Adam. Easy to say and spell, not too many around now and sounds nice
One of my adult DS's middle name

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/07/2023 23:07
  1. John - total classic but he'll likely be the only one in his class. Johnny is a cute/cool nn if wanted (or Jack).
  2. James - perennial classic but still fairly popular so might be others. Nice nn choices too in Jem or Jamie.
  3. Adam -nice sound but not quite as classic imo as the previous two and no obvious nn choices if he hates it for some reason
  4. River - cool vibe but I think it takes a certain personality to pull off (so not as neutral as the first 3 names)
  5. Jake - not keen on nn's as given names. Jacob is okay but not as nice as your other choices imo.
TempsPerdu · 30/07/2023 23:59

Adam. It is the archetypal ‘handsome’ name for me. Simple and straightforward and not overly common at the moment.

John would be my second choice - a baby John would be a refreshing change at the moment.

Not keen on River.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/07/2023 00:02

John. I only know one and he is very elderly, yet everyone knows how to pronounce and spell it. I like the sound, and the elegant simplicity.

AnnaNims · 31/07/2023 00:04

All nice apart from River which is wanky.

John seems like the most dull name ever, but I like it.

Cheeseplantt · 31/07/2023 00:06

Definitely Jake.

CallieQ · 31/07/2023 00:08

Not River

ParisP · 31/07/2023 00:10

John is my favourite by a mile. Such a nice sound.

Lucia574 · 31/07/2023 00:14

John or Adam. Both great, attractive, strong names. I teach. and they are not commonly used names (which I think is a good thing). I teach loads and loads of Jakes and James. River I don’t like, but never come across one.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 31/07/2023 00:24

Adam John - only cos I like AJ as a nn

All your choices are fine OP

MerryMarigold · 31/07/2023 00:26

Got 2 Rivers (girls) and a River sibling (boy) where I work. Out of 40 kids. Definitely a name of the moment.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 31/07/2023 00:28

John or James.
Not River.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 31/07/2023 10:23

John! That was our pick but we had a little girl.

I like James and Adam too

Spidey66 · 31/07/2023 10:25

In order....Jake, Adam, James, John, River.

really? i find the opposite. We use the name a lot at work and it frequently by many people gets jhon.

BinFace · 31/07/2023 10:29

John is the best by far- a classic name but not over-used these days.

James and Adam- both fine.

Jake- this was the name that cool boys had when I was at school in 1993. Bit cringey now.

River- very different from the rest. Suspect this will be thought of as mainly a girl’s name within a few years so bear that in mind if it bothers you.

rockpoolingtogether · 31/07/2023 10:34

Jakob which can be Jake

user1492757084 · 04/08/2023 06:07

John
Then Adam, then James.
I would not use Jake as it seems like a nick name.
River is fine if your family has the vibe to match.
Or you could use the name of an actual River that you like.

FedUpMumof10YO · 04/08/2023 06:14

James / Jake

NannyR · 04/08/2023 06:15

I love John/Johnny.
Personally, I find James a really boring, bland name and dislike it a lot.

SemperIdem · 04/08/2023 21:52

Adam is the best of your names.

John is the all time most overdone male name in world history, when all the different language variants are taken into account. It’s not fresh, it’s aggressively boring.

James - never met an adult one who isn’t a bit strange

River - where the social media alternative types meet in the middle with social media chavs and agree

Jake - it’s just a nothingy nickname, bland
