Traditional, common vs modern or uncommon

Q1. Did you choose traditional names like Anna, Lucy, and Alexander for your children, or more modern and uncommon names like Luna, River, and Adrienne? And are you content with this choice?

Q2. Do you have a traditional, classic, or commonly used name, or do you have a more modern or unique name? If you could go back in time and choose a different name for yourself, would you choose something different?

  1. I will choose a traditional, classic name that is somewhat international.
  2. I have an old name but it has only recently become more common. I like it but it's quite long and made me realise I want my DD to have a shorter name.
rainymaydays · 29/07/2023 22:14

My ideal name is an old name that isn't extremely common and is short and easy to say.

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 23:20

Traditional-ish but not very common. There’s a lot of water between Lucy and River. Yes happy with my choice.

I have a trad, popular name. As a kid I would have definitely liked something more unusual. Doesn’t bother me as an adult.

Same. That's what DH and I have, and what our children have too.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 30/07/2023 00:03

DS1 has a traditional, but not overly common name. DS2 has a top 3 name.

I have a traditional very common name. I spent years using different forms of it and hated it. I love it now and wouldn't change it.

Aquamarine1029 · 30/07/2023 00:11

I have a classic name, but not as common as Elizabeth, Catherine, etc. I have always received loads of compliments for my name but I have zero emotional attachment to it. I don't dislike it at all, yet I've never felt like it's "my" name. I know, it's odd and hard to express.

My children, 24 & 26, have unusual names, but not modern. My son's name was been used for a very long time, but rarely. My daughter has a feminised male name due to a particular reason known to my husband and myself. I have received countless compliments on both of their names, as they do as adults, and they both love their names.

SkaneTos · 30/07/2023 19:13

Q1. I don't have children, and I don't know if I will be able to, but if I would have children I would choose traditional names for them, I think. Probably names from older beloved relatives, and the names I have in mind are traditional and quite timeless.

Q2. I have a given name that was extremely common in my country around 1880-1910, and it is uncommon now. It has not made a comeback either, like some other names from that era.
I am happy with my name, it is nice and short, and two of my great grandmothers had that name.
I feel like the name is "me", so I would not change it.

SquigglePigs · 30/07/2023 19:25

I have a traditional but very unusual name (only encountered one or two other people with it in my life). DH has a traditional and not uncommon name for his generation.

DD has a traditional and relatively common name (top 50 but not top 10).

Songbird54321 · 30/07/2023 19:35

My daughters have traditional, common names. Both top 10.
This is because my name, although not completely out there, was not at all popular when I was growing up (think top 500 rather than top 100). I was born early nineties and it always seemed a name from the early 1900s to me. It seems more popular as a middle name and I have heard it more now than I did when I was young. I'm still spelling it out for people though and it is spelt wrong frequently on emails despite my name being in the sodding email address. Not that it bothers me 🙄

GreenMarigold · 30/07/2023 19:48

I have a traditional name which was fairly popular when I was born, and still is one of those solid, respectable names. I’ve always strongly disliked it though.

Both of my children have traditional names.

My eldest’s sounds more old fashioned and was out of top 200 when I chose it although there is a popular shortening. My youngest has a top 50 name which sounds more modern although has been around for a long time.

UsingChangeofName · 30/07/2023 19:57

My dc all have traditional names.
The eldest's name is very common for his age group (he was born before MN and before common use of the internet, so I had no idea about popularity). The other two are well known names but unusual for their age group - think of calling a boy 'Peter' today - everyone has heard of it, but likely to be the only one in their class, or their hobby or activity group.

I would 100% go for the same, today.

My name is very, very common in people of my age.
It is okay. I'd like to go places where I am the only one with my name, but I'd still rather have a popular but traditional name over one I have to spell, or even worse, explain everywhere I go.

Shrinkingviolet6 · 30/07/2023 20:01

My son has a very common name - consistent top 3. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, no shortened nicknames.

Mine is a bit more unusual and I’ve spent my life getting incorrect spellings or pronunciations or people assuming I’m male as the male version of my name is much more common (only 1 extra letter in mine)

I didn’t want my child to face the same so made sure there was little chance of error with his name.

LolaSmiles · 30/07/2023 20:04

Mine have traditional names that aren't used very often. When we meet other people with those names, the parents usually say they don't come across one regularly.

chineapplepunks · 30/07/2023 20:34

We chose an uncommon name and are incredibly happy with our choice. It suits DD so well
My name is very common, was the top name of the year I was born and I know about 6/7 other people with the same name. I don't hate it at all but it would be nice to have a different name!

KeeefBurtain · 30/07/2023 20:45

My name is Lucy, I was born in 1980 and I didn’t meet another Lucy until I was in my 20s. So a traditional name that was uncommon (to me) growing up.

my children have a mix - my 2 oldest both have names that were top 100/200 when I named them but are now in the 10s/60s

my 2 youngest have names in the 500+ but the shortened versions are top 100.

I have a big age gap between the 2 oldest (late teens) and 2 youngest (early primary)

their names are all traditional and in a similar style, and I’m expecting the younger ones to go up the charts at some point, the names both get suggested on here a lot!

AutumnalPumpkin · 30/07/2023 21:12

I do love older traditional names, however I named my daughter Indica.
I have an uncommon name, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's unusual or modern. I wouldn't chose it for myself, but I also don't know what else I'd like to be called given the choice, so I probably wouldn't change it in hindsight.
I go by a shortened version of my name // nickname, so it doesn't ever really get used in its entirety 😆

clpsmum · 30/07/2023 21:41

I have a nickname I hate it

clpsmum · 30/07/2023 21:41

As in my actual name is a nickname

I prefer fairly traditional names that arent really common.

My DS was named after my dh's late father, so he has a Welsh, slightly old fashioned name. We know of a couple of adults but no children with the name.

My DD has a fairly traditional, international name, which I really love. It's Well known but not very common. She's the only one on her school.

I have a classic, very 70s/80s name. A long name with multiple shortenings, one of which im known as all the time' hardly anyone uses my full name. I didn't like it growing up really but I do like my full name now.

lljkk · 30/07/2023 21:56
  1. DC have boring names, biblical, basically. No regrets
  1. I have a name that is either a modern classic or truly dreadful, was very popular in the day, depends which mNer you listen to.
