Shall we change daughters name?

We named her Lucy but she’s now 4 months and we still don’t feel like it’s her name. We have different tastes so it feels like a compromise for both of us. We’ve decided we both prefer Mia although this was originally discounted due to popularity. Would you change her name?

I much prefer Lucy. Mia is very popular.Have you tried calling her Lu or Lulu, see if it suits her better?

SkaneTos · 14/07/2023 23:20

They are both lovely names.
If you both feel that it feels right to change it, then change it.

Dotcheck · 14/07/2023 23:21

I think they are both similar in terms of popularity

pinguins · 14/07/2023 23:22

I wouldn't go to all the faff of changing it now it's registered. I regret DS's middle name but we're not changing it and hopefully he'll grow into it.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 14/07/2023 23:24

No
Her name is Lucy
She's not a dog

Mia is nowhere near as nice as Lucy anyway

Ilovechocolate87 · 14/07/2023 23:26

I have a Mia :) It's a really nice name and i wouldn't say it's ridiculously popular, I've hardly met many and she is early primary school age. There is one other Mia in her year I think.

However after 4 months, when everyone knows her and she is legally registered changing a name is quite a big deal....although not impossible I suppose.

2chocolateoranges · 14/07/2023 23:36

I would stick with Lucy, it’s such a pretty name.

i work in early years and have met a few Mia’s but never know if it’s pronounced My-ah or Me-ah as have had girls with this name pronounced both ways.

Incfae · 14/07/2023 23:36

Thanks all, the faff of changing it is also really off putting … it seems quite easy in the first year but I don’t like that her birth certificate will always show her original name. It just doesn’t feel like she’s growing into her name, wish we’d waited to register her

I love the name Lucy. Not keen on Mia at all.

Marmaladesarnie · 14/07/2023 23:39

As a teacher I’ve taught a few really really lovely Lucy’s. I think it’s a great name and makes me think of a sweet, bright, confident little girl.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 14/07/2023 23:42

Lucy is a lovely name. I would keep it.

RWB9 · 14/07/2023 23:46

Lucy was my favourite girls name when pregnant so I’m biased. Also would the name change mean she’d always have to declare she’s been known as another name when applying for things?

Ducksurprise · 14/07/2023 23:51

Disagree, if you are 16 weeks in and neither feel it is her name change it. Try calling her Mia for the next week and see how it fits, you could always make Lucy a middle name so she could choose when she is older.

DramaAlpaca · 14/07/2023 23:52

Lucy is so much nicer. She'll grow into it.

Pjmasksonrepeat · 14/07/2023 23:57

Both are lovely. It's a lot easier to change it now than to regret it. Why not try it out for the next week and see if it feels right? If it does trial it for a month or two then officially change it. If people ask just tell them the truth that you prefer Mia.

HeddaGarbled · 15/07/2023 00:06

I read so many of these threads and I find them a bit pathetic, TBH. You weren’t choosing a paint colour.

You discussed it, chose it over all other options, and then went to a registry office, sat in front of a registrar and had it officially registered and went away with the legally binding documentation.

Now you’re indulging in some sort of self-indulgent twaddle about it ‘not feeling like her name’.

It’s a perfectly fine name. When you knock this nonsense out of your head, it’ll ‘feel like her name’ just fine.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/07/2023 00:12

They are both pretty. You could add Mia as a middle name and call herMia. But you can’t go wrong with either.

Stonebridge · 15/07/2023 00:13

Just try out Mia on her for a couple of weeks to see how it feels. I'm not sure it even needs to be officially changed? Can't you use Mia like a nickname and have Lucy on official documents. This is/was very common in Ireland where people would eg be named after a family member as a tradition but were always known as a different name.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/07/2023 00:17

Lots easier to change it now than later I like the idea of trying it out and then adding it on officially later

Sugarfree23 · 15/07/2023 00:18

Lucy is lovely and she's still very small she'll grow into it very soon.
Do you refer to her as Lucy or the baby?

MaxwellCat · 15/07/2023 00:23

Don't call her mia but keep the name Lucy that's very odd and confusing just change it now if you want to as I'm pretty sure under a year it can be changed on the bc and you won't need to declare it

Topseyt123 · 15/07/2023 00:33

Lucy is a great name. I'm biased because I have a Lucy. 😃

Personally, I am not that keen on Mia but that's just personal choice. You could add it as a middle name and use it I suppose, but that wouldn't be my favourite option. I'm known by my middle name myself and it is a bloody nuisance. A lifetime of explaining!!

Lol, this is exactly how I think I should feel! We had 9 months and our other children were all named months before they were born but for some reason we changed our minds multiple times up until we were literally sitting at the registry office with this one. We will probably keep Lucy as a middle name. I just don’t like the name Lucy in the same way as her siblings names.

What about Lucia? Lovely name ( I think so anyway!)

Loo-chee-a. This is an Italian name and is very popular. It is an alternative to the word 'Lucy' or 'Lucie'.

user1492757084 · 15/07/2023 03:14

Yes, I agree with Lucy over Mia .. though Lucia rhymes with Mia and is a good alternitive.
