Hi all,

DH and I are struggling to agree on a boy’s name, our surname is short, fairly common and begins with an S.

There’s a few names that we both kind of agree on but I have reservations about all of them so wanted to get some opinions! Please could you let me know your thoughts on our short list? Suggestions also welcome!

  • Teddy - Are there too many of them? Is this too cutesy to be a full name / adult’s name? We don’t agree on either Edward or Theodore as a longer version.
  • Stanley - This is DH’s favourite on the list, I’m not sure if it’s too old-fashioned / too out there?
  • Jack - Not sure if this is a bit boring? Especially with a common surname. My family think it’s a strong, classic name, but DH’s family think it’s a naughty name?
  • Beau - Not sure it’s as strong / classic as some of the others, think it might be better as a middle name?
  • Finley - This is DH’s least favourite, and I’m not sure it’s quite right either!

Also names that DH likes that I don’t: Chester, Woody, Reggie. And names that I like but DH doesn’t: Rafferty, Zachary, Harry, Archie

Thank you!!

Love Stanley and Zachary.

I do like Teddy but think it needs to be “short” for something. Any other of the Ed names work if rears and Theodore aren’t an option?

I’m going to suggest Henry, Isaac and Xander

MerryMarigold · 04/07/2023 17:11

Teddy is a bit Essex (I know quite a few!)

Stanley is nice. It's not that out there, I know one aged 3. Jack is fairly common but not as common as George. How about Zack?

MerryMarigold · 04/07/2023 17:16

Dh's names do sound more 'naughty' and less classic! I prefer Jack to Beau, Teddy or any of Dh's.

If you can't decide then you can just wait till after the baby's born, then the fact you've given birth and Dh has seen what you've been through means he'll give in (top tip from experience!).

Overthinkingoverthinking · 04/07/2023 17:59

@Sofiatheworst Thanks for your reply! I agree about Teddy needing to be short for something I think. I like Theodore but DH likes Edward, not sure what other 'Ed' names we could use? I'm also wondering if they would end up never being called Teddy if it's short for a longer name especially if there's a lot of Teddys in their class! I love Xander but DH doesn't. Not as keen on Isaac, and Henry has already been used in the family but I do really like it! Thanks for your suggestions!

@MerryMarigold Thanks for your replies. I had heard that Teddy is very common but interesting that maybe Jack is becoming less common, that's helpful to know. We don't have many friends with little ones yet so we don't really have an idea of what's common and what isn't. I've not come across any other Stanleys born recently so that's helpful that you know a young one, perhaps it will gain in popularity a bit! I really like Zack but DH doesn't.

Glad it's not just me that thinks DH's names sound more 'naughty' than mine! I've said this all along! Haha I have been wondering if he might give in to some of my choices after the birth, - fingers crossed!

I know a 4yo Stanley and it's a great name. I know quite a few Teddies, I do like it but I don't know how it will age.

Zach/Zack is great.

Wait and see when he's born, you might get a better feeling when you meet him. I named both of mine 'provisionally' when pg but didn't decide 100% until they were here and I'd had a week or so to get used to them.

MovingBird123 · 04/07/2023 18:12

How about Teddy short for Edmund or Edwin?

Beau makes me cringe.

😂😂😂

I will definitely be remembering that too tip!

Teddy - Lots of them. He'll probably be Ted as an adult.
Ed is better. I like Edward, Edwin and Edgar. Edmund is OK. I don't like Theodore.

Stanley - Not too old-fashioned/out there. I know a young Stanley. There are nicer names. Will be Stan

Jack - Safe and lots of them.

Beau - bloody awful. Only ok if your surname is Tighe or Tyson

Finley - Very popular. A bit wet sounding. Will be Finn.

Chester, Woody, Reggie. - Reggie is OK, others awful
Rafferty, Zachary, Harry, Archie - Harry is ok, Zac is ok but popular. No to Archie and Rafferty

Sirzy · 04/07/2023 18:25

Stanley from your list.

i agree with others that Teddy is best as a nickname

LizzieBet14 · 04/07/2023 18:29

Teddy is becoming very popular for boys and dogs alike. I called my dog Teddy and have met 5 others (& counting) on our local walks.....

I think it suits dogs more - I can't imagine a 15 year old lad called Teddy.....

Redbone · 04/07/2023 18:33

Far too many Jacks and Teddys around . Also know of 3 Ruperts and 2 Stanleys born around here in the last month!

Newnamenewname109870 · 04/07/2023 18:38

Edmund?

NBLarsen · 04/07/2023 18:41

Teddy - it's a nickname, fine for a baby or a dog, but give him a proper name to apply for jobs with and be taken seriously with.

Stanley - it's a great name, old fashioned but in a nice way.

Jack - it's so boring and so overused.

Beau - it doesn't feel like a proper name to me, I look at it and just see half of the word "beautiful".

Finley - a good solid name, modern classic.

Chester - fine, maybe a bit "celeb".

Woody and Reggie - also nicknames, as above, give your child a name to be taken seriously with even if you use a nickname yourself.

Rafferty - nice, fine.

Zachary, Harry, Archie - as with Jack, they are all so popular, loads of them around.

Fueledbycoffee · 04/07/2023 18:44

I really love Stanley but I love all the "grandad names" as my DH says! It's my favourite on your list. Ted could be a good option, rather than Teddy. Jack is still very common but is a name that's never going to be out of fashion. Reggie/Ralph/Alfie/Ronnie are all names I've heard recently and liked.

Stanley Beau

i like Teddy but prefer Theodore/ Edward for when he’s older

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/07/2023 22:53

Not sure we share taste in names as I only really like classic Jack, sorry - I tend to prefer more timeless names that are likely to age well, although I quite like Zachary too (at least it's pretty classic Biblical, if possibly a bit trendy recently).

I'd personally avoid names like the cute nicknames (Woody, Archie, Teddy etc) as I think they may date, equally "old man" type names (Stanley, Chester), and surname- type names (Rafferty, Finley) are so fashionable right now.

If you like Jack, maybe Max or Joel?
If you like Zachary, maybe Tobias (nn Toby) or Elias (nn Eli) ?

If you are worried about having too popular a name with a commonplace surname, there are some fairly classic but less common names like Nathaniel, Owen etc that are still outside the top 100 at the moment.
