Laila/leila/Layla spelling variations

I’m pregnant with my second daughter and we are unsure on baby names but can both agree on the name Layla. My partner isn’t British and they spell the name layla differently to us. If it is spelt Lejla would people in England/United Kingdom still pronounce it as Layla?
My daughters name is Isla but again spelt Ayla due to different country spellings so we cannot have the traditional spelling of Layla.

Ayla doesn't sound like Isla in the UK AFAIK.
Ayla and Layla are too close for siblings, IMO

Lejla will probably be said as Ley-la or Ledge-lain the uk

Layla is a lovely name. I think you can either spell it Leija. I wouldn't know how to pronounce it but once told it would be easy to remember. It looks pretty written down too.
I think Leija and Ayla sound quite similar but very pretty together.

KirstenBlest · 04/07/2023 12:32

Leija is missing the second L, and without knowing the language, looks like it might be Ley-a or Ligh-ya

If the language is German or Norwegian, won't the ej/ei read as the same sound as 'eye'? If it's Swedish, Leila/Lejla will be 'ley-la'

Leila is the only spelling I like - it's the same as the lovely journalist, Leila Mckinnon.
Ayla and Leila still do sound too alike for sisters, I think.
Do you like Leah?

It's Lejla not Leija.

I would pronounce Lejla as Layla.

@BlackLambAndGreyFalcon , that was in response to

I'd say Lejla as Ligh-la or Lay-la depending on the surname. Ayla I'd say as Ail-a.

If the names were Isla and Layla, I'd say they were too alike, and the pronunciation confusion you'd get in the UK with Ayla and Lejla makes it worse.
OP isn't in the UK, so they might be OK where she is, but she specifically asked about the UK.

You can't have Isla and Layla, no matter the spellings. Far to similar

SunnyFog · 05/07/2023 21:38

I would read Lejla as Layla but most people in Britain wouldn't.
I get Ayla wrong every time, poor kid is sick of telling me.
Some of the kids use a different spelling on their "known as", eg Lejla could be known as Layla, and Ayla as Isla if necessary.
A lot of the time you or your kids will say their names, and then it's easy to hear the difference. People will just spell them every which way.
Beautiful names.
