I want DS to be named after a very dear relation his name is Jack, unfortunately I cannot use Jack as my brother got there first (named his DS after the same person)
Can I use Jackson/Jaxon? The cousins live will live an hour away and see each other at family events and Christmas / birthdays but nothing more.
They will also have different surnames

Of course you can.
If you went for a middle name starting with J your some could be known as JJ in the family.
Or you could name your son Jack but use his middle name as his known name.
There’s lots of ways to mix it up.
And I do like Jaxon.

NuffSaidSam · 03/07/2023 10:38

You could.

But I wouldn't.

Why not use Jack as a middle name and pick another name for the first name? Did the Jack you're naming him after have a middle name you could use?

JenniferBarkley · 03/07/2023 10:43

Personally I wouldn't use a name so close to a first cousin and I wouldn't love if my sibling named their child something so close to my DC.

What about John/Sean/any other variations of that name? Or your relative's middle name?

At the end of the day, it is fine but it may not be popular and I wouldn't want to be bringing that kind of attention on myself if that makes any sense.

Haljust26 · 03/07/2023 11:14

My brother is expecting me to use Jack as I have always said I would be using it if I had a son so I was quite taken back eyes he announced his Jack
i do like Jaxon though

If you like Jack use Jack! They are cousins with different surnames who won’t be seeing eachother too often. If it’s a name you love, use it ❤️

user1492757084 · 03/07/2023 11:46

The cousins will have different surnames and be at a different school. Use Jack with confidence.
Jaxon is not Jack and it will date horribly.
Jackson means son of Jack. Will your son be a son of the Jack?

Does the relative have another name?
Was he John on his BC? That could also be an option.

Needmorelego · 03/07/2023 11:50

It used to be fairly common for cousins to have the same name as they were given family names.
They may be cousins but it sounds like they aren’t going to have a close relationship similar to siblings so I don’t think it matters.
If you want the name Jack then go for it.
At family events they can be Big Jack and Little Jack.

Amylivida · 03/07/2023 12:53

Personally I am not a fan of Jaxon , a bit too American, I do like jack and if it's the name you want go for it, the boys will be in different groups and schools etc so I wouldn't be too worried

I agree simply because I really dislike Jackson and Jaxon is awful! I'd rather use Jack as a middle name.
Historically Jack was a nickname for John so you could use that.

BreviloquentBastard · 03/07/2023 13:07

I don't actually see the problem with first cousins having the same name, but I come from a very big family and have a few cousins with the same name as me! We're quite close and it doesn't really matter that we all share a name, it's quite funny really.

You could just use Jack as a middle name if it really bothers you though? Jackson is ok but will likely end up being called Jack anyway. Jaxon is horrible.

MossCow · 03/07/2023 13:12

I'd just use Jack if you want to call your son after someone. I don't think calling him Jaxon is the same at all. You would be better off calling him John which is the name Jack evolved from.

Having two cousins called Jack is OK in my opinion.

WilkinsonM · 03/07/2023 13:14

Jaxon is a horrible awful spelling. Use Jackson!

FloweryName · 03/07/2023 13:15

I wouldn’t. It seems unfair to the grandparents to give them two grandchildren with the same/very similar names.

EmmaAmeliasMum · 03/07/2023 13:25

In this situation I would honestly use Jack - if you really have your heart set on it. If the cousins are only going to see each other a couple of times a year, I'd be even more inclined to. I really don't think it's that big a deal at all.

Jackson/Jaxon is tacky and nowhere near as nice as Jack.

The comment about how it's not fair to grandparents to name two of their grandchildren the same/similar names - how incredibly bizarre?! For all you know they might not even be involved! This really wouldn't even enter my head as an issue.

Haljust26 · 03/07/2023 14:41

Thank you. Jack is the name I want to use but thought Jackson was slightly different but people would still know why we had picked it.
I personally do not see the issue with same / similar names and in real life they are not such an issue but on here often frowned upon. I just wondered the general consensus

Fairymother · 03/07/2023 15:35

Why dont you use it as a middle name? My DD has a middle name honouring someone and a relative has named their DD the name as proper first name. No issue at all.

Haljust26 · 03/07/2023 15:47

I do not want it just as a middle name. I have always said I wanted it as a first name so it would either be first name or go with a different name

viques · 03/07/2023 15:49

Would Jake be close enough?

YellowDots · 03/07/2023 15:50

Just have it, really. You've always wanted it and it means a lot to you.

wingsofabird · 03/07/2023 18:20

I think you can and should still use Jack
how about Zack?
Jackson also a good option

Miekle · 03/07/2023 18:45

I think that since your brother knew in advance that you were going to call a future child Jack, he obviously can't mind if you still use it and they have the same name. If he does mind, he's an arse and so you should ignore him and use it anyway.
Unless they are living in the same village it won't bother anyone that they are cousins with the same name. It will just be Big Jack and Wee Jack, or whatever nicknames they end up with.

RosaSkye · 03/07/2023 20:42

Do you like Jasper? Jack can be derived from that- Jack Daniels for example was a Jasper

But I agree with others about using Jack if it’s what your heart has been set on

Theoldwoman · 03/07/2023 22:09

Jackson is a nicer spelling, Jaxon and worse Jaxson, is terr.

I would pick a completely different name.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 22/10/2023 05:34

Jack is a derivative of John. So you could call him John.
Are you definitely having a boy? Otherwise, a girl could be Jaclyn, Jacqueline etc.
Or you sons name could be spelt Jacques, but pronounced Jack.
Or Jackie/Jacky/Jane.
