So we are keeping the gender a surprise BUT I had my cervix measured the other day and baby was breech…. Pretty obvious it’s a boy haha! Keeping it a secret from hubby though :)

we want to call our boy Idris but pronounced Id-Reese

I like idris but it would be said like idris Elba, hubby wants Idrees, maybe Idryse? I don’t know ! Any suggestions ?

if it is a girl we are thinking Sophia, but then there’s Sofia, Soufia, Ah!,

Sophia is spelt like that. There’s no need to try and make it complicated. To avoid constant mispronunciations of the boys name I’d probably go with Idrhys

KirstenBlest · 23/06/2023 20:55

The Arabic name Idris is pronounced Idrees. I think in Urdu they tend to spell it Idriss but say Idrees, but I don't know much Urdu

How do you want to say Sophia - Soff-eye-ah, soff-ya, soff-ee-ah?
I'd spell it Sophia.

The welsh name Idris is written as Idris bt said as 'Id-ris' . The welsh name Rhys doesn't sound like Rees in Welsh so the Idrhys misspelling looks horrible, and doesn't work.
(adding the prefix would cause the rh to mutate, and the stress would be on Id anyway so the 'ys' would sound like 'is' )

I have no idea about Idris but I would definitely go for the Sophia spelling as it's the most common!

What about just Reece?

OhHeyBabe · 24/06/2023 00:09

Idrhys and Sophia if pronounced sofe-ee-yah.

Barleysugar86 · 24/06/2023 00:09

Idris and Sophia.

continentallentil · 24/06/2023 13:34

Idris is going to get pronounced like the Welsh name so I’d find something else

KirstenBlest · 24/06/2023 14:04

The suggestion of Idrhys is awful. Please don't use it. It looks completely wrong if you are Welsh-speaking, and unique in a bad way otherwise.

Idrees is a known spelling, although not hugely popular.

Weird how I suggested that spelling as I’m welsh and that is how I’d pronounce it, and everyone’s saying the Welsh way is wrong 😂 I almost put I’m not sure if that would work for you as it’s the Welsh spelling, I wonder how other Welsh people are pronouncing it compared to me

I’m Welsh speaking, my ex boyfriend about 2 decades ago was called Idrhys, haven’t come across it since 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Fiddlerdragon , I pp why it makes no sense.
Rhys isn't said as Rees, it's
How to pronounce Rhys (Welsh) - Bing video

If you add a prefix to a word, the initial consonant mutates, so it would become rys. cf. Môn and Arfon, bro and Penfro
Depending on the letter that comes after it and whether or not it's a stressed syllable, the vowel length is long or short (e.g. Carys, Rhys)

If you speak Welsh, I can't understand why you wouldn't know this.

For the kids sake, keep it simple. Idris or Sophia.

Because that’s not how I or anyone I know pronounces it. I was born and raised in Pontypridd and there’s a shit ton of people called Rhys, we pronounce it Rees.
