Does this work as a girls name for you? If not a first, maybe as a middle?

Emily Lilac and Chloe Lilac just came to me today.

Lilah is much better.

CallieQ · 05/07/2023 22:20

Lilac..... no

I strangely liked Lavender when naming my own. Lilac wouldn't be to my taste, I think the 'lac' would sound very blunt in the accent of my area so that wouldn't help.

Is a commune in France.

It's a pretty flower name. I like it as a middle name.

Daphnis156 · 21/07/2023 23:42

You could always try Buddleia, a little more upper class, I think.

FayCarew · 22/07/2023 11:36

@Daphnis156 , goodness no, spreads itself about too much

reelcat · 23/07/2023 18:29

I really like it, prefer it to your first name ideas

With apologies to anyone named Lilac, traditionally the flowers are associated with funerals. My mother and grandmother would never have it in the house and it may be quite a widespread superstition.

I think two superstitions have been conflated here, perhaps because the flowers’ names are so similar.

It’s lilies which are traditionally associated with funerals and death. Back when you were allowed to take cut flowers into hospital wards when visiting it was a common superstition to avoid lilies because of the connotations of death.

There are separate superstitions in English folklore around lilacs, specifically white lilac, and not having them in the house because they are considered unlucky.
