Hi, I’m expecting a baby girl and partner and I can’t agree on a first name for her. We previously agreed on Lydia but he now doesn’t like this. He likes Lily but I don’t.

What are your thoughts on the below? I LOVE Matilda but partner isn’t keen/thinks it’s old fashioned.

Matilda
Martha
Phoebe
Charlotte
Lydia

thanks! 😊

I like Charlotte best. Mathilda is dire. Don't like Martha or Phoebe very much.

alexdgr8 · 22/06/2023 00:12

Charlotte.
definitely.
no contest.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 22/06/2023 00:17

You’ve listed my son’s y5 class lol 😆
They are all lovely names.
Personally I love Matilda and Lydia, and Charlotte has a lot of nickname options.
I like Phoebe the least, to me it looks clunky. But it is popular.
They are all good. Lily is everywhere and very boring, imo.

continentallentil · 22/06/2023 00:43

I’d go for Lydia

I like Matilda but it’s super popular - maybe tell your partner that?
Phoebe is fine
Charlotte great but so overdone
Martha a bit handmaids tale
Lily a bit wet

marblemad · 22/06/2023 04:03

Matilda - My sisters name but hers is the traditional name this is a tacky variation.
Martha - reminds me of guinea pigs
Phoebe- ok but reminds me of her from friends
Charlotte- reminds me of the awful girl from geordie shore
Lydia- favourite

SnoringPains · 22/06/2023 07:19

I love Lydia, it’s one of my closest friends names and she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met so definitely biased! I also love Martha. Matilda is nice but common these days, Phoebe is objectively nice but I know an awful Phoebe so could never use it. Charlotte is fine but the least interesting of the lot.

inappropriateraspberry · 22/06/2023 08:12

All lovely.
Matilda quite common at the mo though. But they are all good classic names that won't date.
As to the chlamydia/Lydia. I don't know any young child that has heard of chlamydia, and when they're older I doubt anyone would say it!

bumblebee2235 · 22/06/2023 08:15

Named my daughter Charlotte, although we go by Lottie. We couldn't decide so we went by meaning, Charlotte means Free.

OopsieeDaisy · 22/06/2023 08:57

I like Charlotte and Lydia, Lydia is a bit less common at the moment and as a pp said, young children are not going to liken the name to chlamydia.

Matilda is ok, Martha is a bit dreary to me and for some reason I really dislike Phoebe.

Scrumbleton · 22/06/2023 12:41

All lovely - Phoebe is my favourite

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/06/2023 19:53

I like all of your choices! My favourite is Phoebe, followed by Martha. But they are all lovely options.

What other version of matilda is there and how is this tacky?

IloveRickyGervaisAndHisTeeth · 24/06/2023 18:40

They're all lovely names

merrymelodies · 24/06/2023 18:41

All except Lydia. Nothing intrinsically wrong with Lydia but... 😑

JunieJay · 24/06/2023 18:42

All are beautiful...I loved Matilda but I had a boy!

Holly60 · 24/06/2023 18:43

LOVE Martha and Lydia. They were on my list for DD but DH not so keen.

Choose one of these ❤️

The actual way to spell matilda is Mathilda

ktsch · 25/06/2023 02:01

@loullou90
My name is Lydia, I'm 32 and can say I've only ever met 1 other.
I love that it's unique and I've never had to be referred by adding my surname too as many of my friends are as we have 3 duplicates in our 8 friendship group
Martha was on our girls list, as was Matilda but this is now very popular in our area so we ruled it out x

ktsch · 25/06/2023 02:05

@loullou90 also never been referred to as chlamydia😂😂

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 14:18

@marblemad , the usual spelling in the UK is Matilda, and thousands of them have been registered in the past 15 years, compared to a few hundred Mathildas.

Giselletheunicorn · 25/06/2023 16:58

Matilda doesn't feel old fashioned anymore. I know two Matilda's under 10.

Martha - this was my choice if I'd had a girl. Love it.

Phoebe - lovely

Charlotte - bit boring IMO

Lydia - dislike
