Hi! The names we loves the most are nn for more formal names. We already have a boys name but need help with girls. Names we like are Edie and Nell but need help! Thank you x

I think Fenella is beautiful.

@ReeseWitherfork , I haven't created a rule. It's just how names tend to be shortened.

That's not how it works though. Some Williams are Will and some are Liam. Some Katherines are Kate and some are Erin.

@User739032 , and some are Kath/Kathy/Katie.
The Erins I know are just Erin AFAIK but maybe they are Katherine or Catherine.

Yes, I know. You are the one saying Fenella would be shortened to Fen. Confused Like there is a one nickname allocation law.

That's how names evolve though. Erin was definitely a shortening/nickname for Catherine but now it's both a shortening and a name on its own. As is Nell.

I think what people are trying to say is that one name can generate several nicknames and it's not the case that Fenella would be Fen as you state.

NotEverORNever · 21/06/2023 09:41

Those are both great names. I particularly love Nell.

Ilovedthe70s · 21/06/2023 09:41

All my children have names that are diminutive of a longer name ie:- Bill, Rosie to give an idea.
None have ever been disadvantaged by this.
My daughter has never reported anyone refusing their prostate surgery because she has a diminutive name for example.
When they were born I had no idea what their nicknames would be as they developed organically as they grew up.
I find the Mumsnet idea of choosing the nickname quite strange.

Muu · 21/06/2023 09:52

It’s fine to use the nickname as the full name.

there are names I always thought were “full” names but I found out are actually nicknames. I am a “use the full name” person but really it doesn’t matter. Use the name you love.

I don't because if you have a long name it will usually be shortened, so if for example you don't want a particular shortening, it's probably a good idea to pick a diminutive. E.g. Sandy not Alex/Al for Alexander/Alexandra.
I find it strange that some names are picked just to use a 'nn', and the somewhat contrived 'nn' suggested.

@MarigoldGlove , only going by the Fenella and Finola I know.

Ok but you said 'it shortens to Fen not Nell'.

Me too, especially boys. William Jones isn’t going to be Billy or Liam, he’s going to be Jonesy. Alexander Brown is going to be Alex or Xander, he’s going to be Browner. Maybe that’s just men I know!

yellowroses12 · 26/06/2023 13:16

I actually registered my daughter the long name and knew from the min she was born we would call her the shortening. Shortly after registering her I had huge regret as the longer name jjst wasn’t her to me so we made the decision to change this on her bc- so glad as she was never going to be called the long name.

Dazedandbemused0 · 26/06/2023 13:37

Nell is a perfectly logical nickname for Fenella. I only know one Fenella who shortens it to Nell. I have never in all my life heard of anyone called Fen 🫤 people can use whatever nicknames they like! As I happens, I love the name Nell and it works just fine as a full name. It also sounds great with Romy. Edie is much more common these days and doesn’t ‘go’ with Romy, I think.

KirstenBlest · 26/06/2023 14:27

@Dazedandbemused0 , you've not read Freya North's McCabe sisters novels then. Smile
