Double barrelled name thoughts?

Hi guys. My partner and I are expecting a baby girl later in the year and are a bit stuck on names.
We’re not married but I feel tight just giving her my surname as we have been together for 10 years and is his baby too, but I would like my name included.
The double barrell surname would be Wilson - Young. Is this awful? I don’t want it to end up a bit of a mouthful for her and a pain, but I think it’s unlikely my partner and I will marry, and sounds silly but I don’t want a different surname completely to my baby.
FYI first names we are stuck between Lily, Phoebe, Lucy and Charlotte 🙄so any thoughts of what goes would be appreciated! X

The surname sounds fine with any of the names you have chosen.
You will get the double barrel haters on this post though.

Charlotte Lucy Wilson-Young is very nice

They all go fine

The double barrel works fine

I have never noticed any double barrel haters on MN

worry not

continentallentil · 16/06/2023 22:56

.. or Phoebe Charlotte as second choice

Lucy a bit wet as a first name
Lily very wet

I don't mind double barrel surnames and in your case Wilson-Young works well I think. Congrats on your baby girl btw😊

For names I really like the first three, I find Charlotte a bit too long with the surname.

As double barrelled surnames go yours is fine, it’s quite elegant actually. I don’t think DB surnames work when the names are too incongruent i.e. Ramsbottom - D’Sanchez (just my opinion and apologies to anyone with that name!)
Charlotte or Lucy Wilson-Young are my faves. I would normally pick Lucy but think it pairs up well with the longer surname

My children have happily lived with a much less euphonious hyphenated name for 26 and 22 years now-there's never been the slightest problem. Hyphenated or yours are really the only options!

CurlewKate · 16/06/2023 23:11

Whatever you do, don't be persuaded to drop the hyphen!

MerryHen · 16/06/2023 23:14

Double barrel name sounds absolutely fine!

I've had one my whole life, DM didn't want to change her name when she married and was a bit ahead of the trend double barrelling (oldest sib is 40). I've always liked that inhsbe DMs name so also didn't want to change my name when I married so DC are double barrelled with one of my names (DMs!) and DH's.

For first names go for whichever you like best :)

Should say "I've always liked that I have Dam's name"

Thanks everyone for the comments, I feel more reassured now that it isn’t daft to have the double barrel 😊

This.

My DD's name works without the hyphen but because British people are so thick my DP insisted it was put in.

Marie2023 · 17/06/2023 06:58

We gave DS my DH’s surname. My SIL would send us cards addressed to DH and DS Smith and Marie Taylor. And inside she’d write, Dear DH & DS, and Marie’. Like I was not part of the family. Just an after thought.

It pissed me off so much, I changed DS’s surname so that he had both our names. It sounds quite nice double-barrelled actually. SIL did us a favour.

YukoandHiro · 17/06/2023 07:00

It's a nice double barrel.

In my daughter's class about a third have a double now mostly got the same reason.

Go for it

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 07:02

As a PP said don't get pressured into losing the hyphen and making it two names.

Sounds lovely. Good luck 👍

Wilson Young sounds and looks great as a surname.
Why do you need the hyphen?
Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't use one.

The two names I prefer from your list are ..
Phoebe Wilson Young
Charlotte Wilson Young

Because some people will assume that Wilson is a middle name then. There is no ambiguity when there is a hyphen.

Justleaveitblankthen · 17/06/2023 09:31

I think that both your surnames go excellent together and all your name choices are lovely 🙂

If it had ever occurred to me to do the same (waaay back) our DC would have been a laughing stock - due mainly to a very long (and always unpronounceable in the UK) foreign surname involved 😂

My DC have his surname only and seem very happy with it though.

Monkelmo · 17/06/2023 09:46

My husband and I have been married for 10 years, but I only use my maiden name and haven't changed any legal documents to take his name. My name is my name and it was my name for 30 years before I met him, and I didn't want to change it just because I got married. But it did pose a problem when we started a family. Our daughter has his surname but I gave her my surname as an extra middle name. It works well. I have an unusual surname and no male relatives with the name so after my generation the surname will be no more.
