Boy name help please

DH and I have very different taste in boy names and are struggling. I can't tell you how many lists of names I have read but I'm hoping somebody might think of one I haven't seen.

DHs taste includes names like: Jonathan, Charles, Jensen. He likes traditional names (I know Jensen isn't traditional).
My taste includes things like: Cyrus, Atlas, Atticus. I like unusual names.

We did briefly agree on Harrison but have gone off that since. Enzo is still on the table but it doesn't feel right.

Equally unhelpful is our family's faces whenever we mention names that we are considering (just say "that's a nice name" ffs?! Don't say nothing at all whilst putting on the fakest smile I have ever seen) as if we manage to agree on one then one of us gets put off by reactions.

I should probably add that other ones DH has said no to (which I think meet both of our criteria) are Ellis, Elijah, Avery, Luca, Ron (Ronald), Hudson, Finn, Finley, Alexander, Jasper

Don't discuss it with your family. Wait until he is born and then say 'He's called Aristotle' or whatever you have chosen.

I don't like any of your list or Jensen. Harrison isn't too bad but Harry is better. I like Enzo but would think there was some italian heritage.

Jonathan and Charles are nice

CurlewKate · 14/06/2023 12:10

Both narrow your lists down to 5. Allow each of you to veto 2. Vote on the remaining 6.

Or just call him Patrick- which is the best name ever and fits all your criteria.

obie1 · 14/06/2023 12:10

Let's bring back the name Gary, it's about to go extinct!

Gary 👍🏻

The annoying thing is that DH automatically vetos anything I suggest (except Enzo), there is almost a blanket veto. I'm not sure if he would accept only vetoing 2!

Jonathan is an absolute no and Charles was on the table until I said it with his family's regional accent and it ruined it entirely.

There is no italian heritage with Enzo.

Honestly stop telling people, everyone will have opinions on every name and will put you off them all. Just decide between yourselves and I think that will take a lot of pressure off

CurlewKate · 14/06/2023 12:45

Still think you should go for Patrick.

Jonathan shortened to Jonty?

georgianwindow · 14/06/2023 12:51

Patrick = Patrick star

Can't have Jonathan because of our surname (and I don't like it)

Is your surname James? 😂

georgianwindow · 14/06/2023 13:01

It isn't, but would prefer not to share what our surname is on here. But Jonathan is off the table because of surname as well as me not really liking the name.

I am hoping there is a name out there that fits both of our tastes though...which, meeting half way, seems to be uncommon but not completely eyebrow raising?

PurBal · 14/06/2023 13:06

Oscar, Laurence, Leo, Frank, Hartley

MrsSamR · 14/06/2023 13:11

Monty or Bertie might suit your husband's traditional tastes but are a little more uncommon?

Or in the same vein as Enzo:

Milo
Otis
Arlo
Ezra
Leo

SkaterBrained · 14/06/2023 13:12

Could you meet halfway with a traditional name with a modern nickname, something like Christopher/Kit for example or Albert/Albie.

Other names that feel halfway include Jude, Nathan/Nate, Marcus.

You also seem to like names starting with vowels - what about Angus, Owen?

obie1 · 14/06/2023 13:12

When I was pregnant with our first child ( we didn't know the sex ) I only had one name that I really liked for a boy.

The only name DH put forward was Richard, to which I said no way, straight away.

We got to 8 months and we still didn't have a boy's name. He then agreed, if it was a boy, we could call him the original name I wanted to call him.

We had a boy 💙

Treebranch · 14/06/2023 13:13

Some classic but unusual names:

Seth
Ruben
Koda
Luis
Edmund
Hector
Casper
Leonard

Ezra
Amos
Solomon
Malachi
Giles
Miles
Evan
Eben
Ambrose

DuchessOfSausage · 14/06/2023 13:18

@Treebranch , Reuben is very popular. Luis is fairly unusual but Louis is popular - I appreciate that they aren't usually said the same way., and Lewis was popular about 20 years ago. Casper/Caspar/Kaspar is popular

Magssss · 14/06/2023 13:21

Rafe/Rafferty/Rafael? Bit different but not terribly unusual!

georgianwindow · 14/06/2023 13:31

MrsSamR I like Milo! Will put to DH.

Magssss I also really like Rafferty and Raphael but I think DH has said no to those. He could really do with coming up with more than 3 names given that he's said no to maybe 30 suggestions from me!

SkaterBrained I do like those suggestions but we have had babies born in the family in the last 18 months that are both Kit & Albie...Albie we aren't that close to but regional accents in the extended family turn it in to "owl-bee" or "owl-beh"

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I also like Ezra which I suggested to DH but he said no...I think DH is the problem here. He just needs to accept Jonathan isn't happening!

What about Alexander/Xander for short or Zachary/Zac?
I feel Z sounding names tend to sound a bit rarer than they actually are, and you’ve got the option of a traditional name with a slightly edgy nickname

DH has said no to Alexander (what's wrong with Alexander?!) and Zachary is another nice one that I will put to him.

This thread has made me realise it's definitely not me being awkward with names, because reading through my responses I've said a lot of "I like this but DH has said no". I have text him Milo and will now text him Zachary to see what he thinks. We do have a child in the family with a name very similar to Zac so I think it may be a no based on that.

Why on earth do people discuss names with family and friends before the child is born?!! I have no idea why anyone would do this- you're just asking for opinions when in reality it has nothing to do with anyone else! Keep your names to yourself!

Because our eldest gets excited and tells people, and we want her to feel as involved in this as possible so don't want to keep it a secret from her
