Evangelia - nn help!

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 12:43

Our DD will be named Evangelia for family reasons. I know it’s a long , non British name and so I need help!

I want a nice nn that could work with Evangelia as a full name but not an Eve, Evie, Eva etc. as they are all so overused.

I am also not a fan of Angie, Angela, Angelina, Lina, Lia!

Would Lily work?

The letter of Evangelia I like are E-A-N-L-I !

I need some inspiration please!

It is usually like De-lila-h

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 15:51

The only one that I honestly really like Ellie. Would that be a good safe choice?

Sorry for not answering personal questions, I am not ignoring you and I take on board what you say. I just think it is too much of a not necessary outing

Again though Ellie is a completely separate name to Evangelia the only similarity is that they share the same first letter. If you truly hate the name Evangelia that much that your trying to use Ellie as a nickname for it then don't saddle your poor daughter with it.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/06/2023 15:56

@Goldblend , it doesn't really 'work', but if you like you can give your chil a completely different nickname. You could call her Polly or Sadie or Spike or Kim or smething.

It is fairly obvious that you aren't comfortable with the name itself. There are baby name regret threads on here every few days. Have a look at some.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/06/2023 15:23

@RoseBucket , Harry from Henry isn't much of a stretch though
Nia from Evangelia isn't obvious at all, whereas Lia is, but OP doesn't like it.

I disagree.

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 16:13

I just thought of Ellie because someone in the very first posts suggested it…

DuchessOfSausage · 09/06/2023 16:15

You may well disagree, @RoseBucket, but Nia is usually short for something ending in -nia like Antonia, or a name in its own right. The n in Evangelia is barely there.

redspottedmug · 09/06/2023 16:22

Lila can be pronounced LEE-la.

Any nicknames you could copy from all the many Evangelias in the family?

DuchessOfSausage · 09/06/2023 16:25

It can, but she'll be 'Evangelia not Evanjelia, Leela not Lyla'

InceyWinceySpidy · 09/06/2023 16:29

If you call her Evangalia then she will be Eva, or Lia (Leah)

Because that's how you shorten that name, and how everyone else will do so, at school etc.

You can try and make weird names as an anagram, but you'll be the only one using it.

Sorry, but that's the case.

Absolem76 · 09/06/2023 16:31

How about Lia. Pronounced as you would the name Leah

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 16:34

@InceyWinceySpidy If we go with Eva would that be Ee-va or Eh-va?

I am asking as Evangelia starts with Eh not Ee .

So how would that be shortened to an Ev name?

OP posts:
Absolem76 · 09/06/2023 16:35

Sorry just seen you don't like Lia. But that Eve, Evie Angie are the natural shortening of the name unless you decide to go with a NN that is completely separate from the full name

SprinkleRainbow · 09/06/2023 16:36

Leah? Was quite a popular name in the 90s but not so much now.
Is Evangeline with a E rather than an A nicer sounding to you?
You could have Lena, Angie, or double barrel it to cover up the actual name you don't like?

Dazedandbemused0 · 09/06/2023 16:47

I think you should just choose a new name. Think of your child! What lesson are you teaching them!l? I lumbered you with a name that even I hate because I was easily bullied by my family?! Why not teach them to stand up for themselves? Evangelia is very odd and awkward sounding and none of the names you want work as nicknames. You’re basically naming your child one thing and giving her an entirely separate name as a nickname because you hate the name you chose for her before she’s even born?!

Ellie is perfect- not many of them around, easy to pronounce for everyone and all nationalities, clearly stems from Evang-Ellie-a
Go with that!
Otherwise I know a couple of people called "V" (Vee) which is really nice.

Festivfrenzy · 09/06/2023 16:51

Or Elia if you wanted another syllable and Ellie as nn?

DesteB · 09/06/2023 16:53

What about Leah

FindingTheFox · 09/06/2023 16:56

Lia, pronounced Leah

LadyBird1973 · 09/06/2023 20:56

The other thing to consider is that nicknames evolve naturally and you will have very little control over what her friends call her at school or what she prefers herself. I think she'll end up being known as Evie.

continentallentil · 09/06/2023 21:29

Annie
Vannie
Lia

This is likely

if you don’t want that can you use it as a middle name instead?

Quornflakegirl · 09/06/2023 21:46

I considered this name for one of my DD with a nickname of Effie.

My sister chose not to follow this custom with her first born ds and she still has a hard time about it 10 years later.

mayorofcasterbridge · 09/06/2023 22:03

If you already get a hard time over your elder child's name, tbh I would just say, "fuck it!" and choose a name you love.
