Multiple Middle Names

I officially have 2 middle names on my birth certificate but only have one on my driver's licence/passport etc.

We were planning on just one middle name for baby, but other side are making noises about how it's nice to name after both grandparents...

Both grans have long (multiple syllable) names starting with the same vowel - think Eleanor & Evelyn. Saying it all (first name + potential 2 middle names + surname) is a mouthful - even though I know we won't really use middle names day to day. Thinking more for official documentation until she chooses to drop one or both (although I may be interjecting my feelings onto that).

Do I stick with my "one is enough" stance, or do I agree to use both to keep peace? Feels vaguely hypocritical though as I dropped one of mine as soon as I could!

Stick with one and choose a middle name that doesn’t have any family links.

I don't have a middle name and neither do DC. Not missed having one.

I have three middle names, and I gave my son 2. It's not really an issue in life. More important is whether keeping relatives happy is a priority for you. If not, then crack on and name your kid what you want. If yes, then 2 middle names, and similar sounding ones at that, are not a problem.

Both DH and I have 2 middle names as do both our families it felt natural to have 2 for dc, do what suits you.

Me and DH each have a middle name and we gave our 3 DC 2 middle names each. He has 2 DC from a previous relationship and they just have 1 middle name each

I have 2 middle names and really hated it growing up , now I don't ,mind it but I do like the simplicity of just first name and last name

I have two, one is quite long. It’s never been a problem

Can you use shorter derivitives of the Granny's names?

TheStartofSomethingBeautiful · 08/06/2023 14:06

No one should get a say other than the parents. It's rude of them to suggest the baby is given both grandmothers' names. It's presumptuous. They shouldn't be trying to influence your decision like that.

I would really have loved to use my mum’s name but didn’t want to use MIL’s so just avoided it altogether.

Dd has three names because I only had one and always wanted a middle name from the age of 8. Give her three names.

TrashyPanda · 09/06/2023 07:05

I have two middle names.

and a long, non-British surname.

somehow I’ve managed over the years…

Beachywave · 09/06/2023 18:07

I call my youngest by first name middle name all the time but I don't with the other two because I don't think they flow as well.

Depends if you want to actually call them by those name or not?
