Girls baby names that are "cool, but not Americanised"

Hello

So we are having a surprise born august.
We have decided a boys name but cannot decide a girls name.
I like Nina but DH has vetoed
He likes Marnie I have vetoed on the ground it's a bit American.
We are looking for something shortish, just a bit hip and cool but not to out there. Even something a bit "surfery".
Any suggestions welcome!

I recently heard the name Margo on a little girl. I thought unusual but not too out there!

Margot is REALLY common round here!

If you are in Wales, popular right now
Cadi
Carys
Elsi
Just pick something you like and forget what country it's from. Once it's your Childs name, that the only thing you'll to associate it with after a short while.

How about Marina - it's not too long, but it's cool, sleek, with image of seas and could have nickname Marnie? It's also name popular all over Europe and used in Britain.

Oh no @tax19!! I’m fully in your corner. I apologize for not making that more clear.
What I meant was that are so many people here now and such a wide variety of names. And then people try to be clever and switch the spelling up - and little Megyn will spell her name forevermore until she dies an old lady. I also knew a Jessika - she has to spell her name wherever she goes too. I know a little Addison - but her parents chose to spell it “Addisyn.” She’s young, but I’ll wager she’s already spelling her name for people.

I do like Nina. One of the things im most fond of it is that it’s appropriate for both a 3-yr-old AND a 93-yr-old. Nina ages beautifully, as opposed to Missy or what-have-you.
My friend Nina’s daughter is named "Rena,” pronounced “Reenah.” So it’s Nina and Rena - a darling mother and daughter.

Marnie is not any more American than it is British, that's just your perception.

As in the thriller 'Marnie' which was written and set in the UK, and later made into the film starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery (in the film they changed the setting to the USA). In the book Marnie was short for Margaret but it could be short for lots of names, like Marina as a pp suggested, or Marianne. Fine as a standalone name too.

Oh and there is also the children's book 'When Marnie was there', also British.

I love Nina though!

Do you like Marnie other than thinking it’s American?

I like Nina, other names I like are Chloe, Laura, Naomi, Seren, Clara

I like Tess!

Nina is lovely and you don't hear many these days!

My favourite girls name is "Elodie" I just think it's beautiful!

I was totally going to say if you like Nina and are in Wales then Nia is a winner, but see someone beat me to it!

Carys or Cerys - like calling a baby Karen
Catrin - nice
Mabli - popular
Anwen - like calling a baby Annette
Eira - ok but snow isn't surfery
Manon - a bit middle-aged
Seren - a bit trendy
Iola - ok but might get Eye-ola or Yo-la, when it's actually Yolla
Alys - ok

Nina is nicer than these

And it also has the same ending sound as Nina.

Great suggestion!
