What are your opinions on Srishti, which is a Sanskrit name for girls? What would an equivalent name be in English?

A few responses on my last thread shared that they though Shruti had a similar vibe to Jane, which was really helpful!

Twistie

I taught a lovely Srishti a few years ago. I think it's a really pretty name!

itssquidstella · 02/06/2023 11:19

To me it feels very feminine, so maybe an equivalent would be Rose or Isabella.

Turquoisa80 · 02/06/2023 11:28

I don't like shristi, I'm south Asian and think it's hard to say. Do you want a name beginning with sh..I think something like Sheena, shanaya, shanti, Shalini might work better

SittingNextToIt · 02/06/2023 11:34

are you Indian? Or your partner?

As an Indian person this is very obviously an Indian name and I’m wondering if that’s why you’re choosing it?

we wouldn’t choose it for our mixed race kids growing up in the Uk And chose super easy on the tongue Indian first names and English middle names for them. They have modern Indian names for their first names but which are very easy to pronounce for the reality of their western lives so to speak!

springtrees · 02/06/2023 11:54

@SittingNextToIt We are both Hindu and want traditional Sanskrit names, both of us are very passionate about our culture so a modern name without a strong connection to our Hindu culture isn’t really going to work for us. I understand the logic behind an easy and international name for some families, I think it depends on the couple. Some families might like names like Ariadne, Daphne or Phoebe for their daughters and others may prefer more modern sounding names like Isla, Ava or Luna. They’re all beautiful in their own way.

It's nice enough but I find it a little bit hard to say, have to concentrate on it. That could just be because I am unfamiliar with it though?

I have to say that I prefer Shruti, which I am familiar with (DD had one in her class etc, lovely girl) and it's easier to pronounce.

Turquoisa80 · 02/06/2023 14:27

Are you going to be using the babys Rashi..how do you know it's "sh" or has she been born. Shruti is nice, we have one and she's very thoughtful and kind

SunnyFog · 02/06/2023 14:44

Makes me think of:

Tricia
Tracey
Christie
Strictly

To be completely honest, I don't like it as it seems like a too-cute diminutive. What do you like about it? Does it have a powerful meaning for you?

SallyWD · 02/06/2023 15:13

I think it's quite hard to say, to be honest. There are so many beautiful Indian names that are very easy to pronounce. Our children have Indian names (DH is Indian). The names are easy to say and both have beautiful meanings.
However, if you think that's the one then go for it.

SirenSays · 02/06/2023 15:42

No hate at all! Maybe it's my dyslexia but every time I glance at it I think it says Shitty so for that reason I'd choose something else.

Dazedandbemused0 · 02/06/2023 15:47

I don’t think it sounds good in English - it sounds too whispy and lispy somehow. My Indian DH doesn’t like it either for similar reasons.

grishaverse · 02/06/2023 17:58

I'm Hindu and from India and I think it's sort of a difficult name to pronounce as someone who lives in England. My 2 daughters both have Sanskrit names and there hasn't been any big issue with pronunciation as such.

WhisperingAutistic · 02/06/2023 18:29

As others have said, it's quite hard for some Brits to pronounce. I really had to think about it as it doesn't roll off the tongue.

DressDilemma · 02/06/2023 20:17

I am from North India and even I find it a tiny bit difficult to pronounce. Also, the 't' sound would always be pronounced different to the hindi sound. There are hundreds of better names to choose if you are planning to stay long term in the UK.

Jellycats4life · 02/06/2023 20:19

I do find it a little bit tricky to say. I think Shruti is much nicer.

Housenoob · 02/06/2023 22:01

I'm Indian (north) and familiar with the name but even I find it a bit hard to say, too much of a tongue twister with the 'sh' sounds. I'm not a huge fan of Shruti either tbh, it's a bit blunt/abrupt sounding and maybe a bit dated? Also it rhymes with juthi (punjabi for shoe) so in my head I associate the name with feet 😂.

Like a pp said the 't' sound will always be pronounced differently here to how it is intended.

Are you definitely wanting an S name? There are so many other options. Sanvi, Shalini, Sareena, Suhani etc all sound more pleasant to me.

springtrees · 06/06/2023 10:08

Thanks for all the comments! I like both Srishti & Shruti but Srishti a lot more, it sounds more vibrant & energetic to me however I can see how the pronunciation may be tricky.
