Hi all,

Please could you share your opinions on the Hindu, Sanskrit name Shruti for a baby girl? This name has a significant meaning in our culture.

It’s pronounced Shrew-tea.

What sort of feeling/ image does it bring up? E.g does it sound girly, sporty, playful, artsy, serious etc?

Thanks!

I’m familiar with the name. It doesn’t conjure up anything particularly, other than that the girls is clearly from a Hindu family. Most people will know how to pronounce it. Some will be inclined, deliberately or innocently, to say “shruh-ti”.

As a non-hindu, native English speaker, I'm afraid it associates in my mind with shrew, shrewd, shortie and inscrutable.

Sorry.

I like it, but I find it hard to pronounce

Shruti the cutie, I like it!

My school friend, UK born of Asian heritage, has a daughter named Shruti. This girl is extremely clever, but also popular, and keen to help everyone, charity work etc. Therefore, to me it conjures up a clever all-rounder just because I know one girl named it!

I don't think it conveys anything negative at all, and is quite pretty

I’ve known a Shruti and would have no problem spelling it or pronouncing it.

I think it’s fab! It sounds sweet to me, but not too cutesy for a grown capable woman.

Wasn't this the name of one of the main characters in 'This is going to hurt'? It's a lovely name but I'd associate it with the character and things didn't end well for her.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

Should I be concerned that the beginning of the name sounds like shrew?

I've come across the name before and like it.

The way I've heard it proounced, the 'u' isn't quite as long as the ew in shrew. It's like half-way between uh and ooh, so to me there's no shrew connection.

I'm a Hindu and I think it's quite nice but it might be because I'm quite familiar with the name so know immediately how to pronounce it. I don't think the shrew thing is an issue, it never even occurred to me, I think if pronounced properly it doesn't have the same sound anyway.

I love it, I work with a lot of people in India and it seems to be a common name which I think is very pretty. It reminds me of the English name Ruth... and I have never thought of shrews! It's not quite pronounced the same way.

Reminds me of 'fruity' !

I have never heard it before but had no problem working out how to pronounce it and I think it is lovely.

Sadly I feel your child will grow up with people constantly asking how to pronounce your name if you are in the UK.

It's easy to pronounce for anglophones and is a nice enough name. I don't see anything negative about it.

I don’t think it’s difficult to pronounce at all. It’s a name I’ve heard plenty of times before. I like it!

Never heard it before and I like it. I also thought of cutie and fruity and didn’t think of “shrew” at all.

Sorry.

That's such an ignorant and culturally insensitive comment.

I think it’s a really cute and girly name, but it would also remind me of the character in “This is going to hurt”.

I like it and I'm not Indian. I know one Shruti, also know a Smruti, Shruti gets less difficulty with people mispronouncing her name. Smruti seems to be more tricky to say in the UK. (she pronounces it Sem-rooty)

I think it's a fairly well known name so I can't imagine that you'll have problems with people mispronouncing it often.

I don't really have any strong associations with the name if I'm honest, so it doesn't conjure up any particular images. I don't think the "u" sound is the same as in shrew, so it would never occur to me to even think of this!

It isn't my favourite Hindu name, but overall, I think it's quite nice!

Love this name, but I will say my connotation with it (as the name was new to me) is the young doctor in BBC drama 'This is Going to Hurt' - it is a sad story line where she ends up committing suicide. I just wanted to flag this as a few people might have the association as it's a less common name in the UK.

But it's beautiful, 'easy' to say and remember (which shouldn't be a thing, but it is) - and I don't have any worry with the 'shrew' bit - they're sweet little animals too!

I've never heard the name before. I'd pronounce it exactly as you've suggested. It doesn't seem difficult to pronounce for only-English speakers.

But, sorry, it makes me think of mushrooms😯

I love it. It was one of my top choices for a girl along with Shreya and anusha
