Dahlia - botanical options

We love the name Dahlia for a girl, from the flower. But we aren't keen on the fact that Lia/Leah would be a huge possibility for a nn.

Are there any other names similar or along the same botanical lines that wouldn't have a 'common' nn?

Daphne?

winterbabyrose · 24/05/2023 16:11

'Common' as in popular. We like slightly more 'unusual' names/nns, eg our DD is Winter, nn Winnie.

Dahlia will probably get misnamed Delia.

Heather
Erica
Hebe
Hyacinth

Why would anyone shorten Dahlia to Lia/Leah?
I'd be more concerned about whether she'd be correcting the pronunciation, -
DAHL-ya vs DAIL-ya

Puppylover83 · 24/05/2023 16:15

Primrose is lovely. You could call her Primmy or Rosie .

PickledScrump · 24/05/2023 16:21

I love Dahlia but only as Dah-lia I hate day-lia so had to strike it off my list.

could you have Dally as a nn instead of Lia/Leah.
I’d say Winnie was incredibly popular so are you looking for something less popular than that?

ShadowPuppets · 24/05/2023 16:25

I have a Bryony, which I like for being plant-y but not too flowery/frilly.

Alternatives: Fern(e), Rowan, Willow (probably not with Winter though), Juniper, Laurel.

LadyFlumpalot · 24/05/2023 16:27

Rose, will probably be called Rosie.
Sage - not my cup of tea but pretty, botanical and also means wise.
Marigold
Violet
Iris

I love Dahlia! It’s on our list for baby due this year. I know of one and she’s always called Dah-lia (not Daylia) and it is shortened to “Dahls” which I think is sweet

I love Primrose, Juniper, Clover and Iris too

SunnyFog · 24/05/2023 18:47

Zinnia

kiwiwatermelonsugar · 24/05/2023 18:48

Dahlia wouldn't get Lia as a nickname unless you wanted it. It doesn't come naturally.

Love Peony

Saffron / Saffie?

I love Dahlia! How about Dilly for a nn?

Delphinium was on my girls name list many years ago (although not sure if I would have been brave enough to use it!)

xelous · 24/05/2023 20:28

Dahlia is on our list (pronounced dahl-ea) and we like the nn dahly. I think it's a beautiful name, you should definitely use it!

Juniper is lovely, Juni a lovely nn x

NadjaCravensworth1 · 24/05/2023 21:12

Also I think we might be spirit animals - I have a Winter Rose aka Winnie and was just yesterday considering Dahlia for a second DD. As a previous poster mentioned though I think the pronunciation would be the biggest issue. I love the shortened 'Dali' but the British pronunciation is 'Daylia' so that wouldn't work ('Daily' not quite as nice!)

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2023 22:44

Cassia? Cassie is a nice nn

winterbabyrose · 25/05/2023 06:47

@NadjaCravensworth1 our Winnie is a Winter Rose haha! Definitely spirit animals.. and of course considering Dahlia for our second! We obviously have great taste ;)

Marigold, the nn Goldie would go beautifully with Winnie.
Birdie
