Wondered what people thought of these names....we like the idea of a name that can be shortened whilst they are young, but they can then choose if they want to use the full version when they are older.
Only trouble is that there are also a couple of names we really like which cannot be shortened, please help! We have chosen middle names after relatives.

Girls

Jessica (Jessy/Jess)
Lola

(Florence will be the middle name)

Boys

Frederick (Freddie/Fred..named after a great grandparent)
Oscar

(Toby will be the middle name)

Well I like yr boys' names. Pal has an Oscar, still unusual enough for me to say "Oscar's Mummy" and it can only be one person (so not true for eg "James's mummy" or "Oliver's mummy" etc).

Of yr girls' names I like Florence best(wd've been DS2's name)

You're right tho, middle names are never used.

Re yr second list, it's hard to say Lola Elsie or Jessica Edith - you have to keep yr mouth open to long on the a-ee bit (FWIW). I lik eboth those names tho. Also May. Like yr middle names better than Jess or Lola but I'm just old-fashioned.

LOVE Lola and Oscar

I really don't like Florence. Really. My Grandmother was named that, she was a lovely woman (took in orphans and everything)....but I still don't like the name.

BTW, had a girl in my hometown whose surname was "MAY" Everyone called her Betty WILL!!!

And she did with quite alot of the happy boys in town

Thanks for all the responses, keep 'em coming!
We both like Oscar too but as it can't be shortened it makes it less flexible resulting in Frederick being the firm favourite for a boy.

DH came home last night and stated that Jessica was only 'OK' so it may well be back to the drawing board for a girls name. So in no particular order or combination we now have the following names which include some family ones too:

Jessica
Lola
Florence
Mary
May
Ann
Edith
Jane
Elsie
June
Rose
Clara

I also quite like Astrid or Amelia. Any other suggestions for a traditional sounding girls first name welcome!

I know most of these girls names can't be shortened either, i think they might be good as a middle name though!

CLARA!!! I love it now and wish that I hadn't rejected it when dp suggested it for dd. Please have a Clara for me .

I also like Rose, Jane, Elsie and Edith.

What about Esther as another suggestion?
