Melissa is a nice name that I really liked when younger but I feel like it’s dated now. I don’t mind Vanessa but also think it could be a little dated too.

Marissa is nice.

Marissa

TeamSleep · 18/05/2023 09:48

Melissa, Vanessa and Marissa in that order.

bobby81 · 18/05/2023 09:51

I like Marissa best, the others seem quite dated.

GeraltsBathtub · 18/05/2023 09:59

Marissa is my favourite. Melissa is ok but I don’t like it being shortened to Mel. I don’t like Vanessa.

Marissa

Marissa

FayCarew · 18/05/2023 11:50

Vanessa, then Melissa.
Melissa is probably the nicest but not keen on Mel.

FatGirlSwim · 18/05/2023 11:53

Melissa. I know a young Melissa and really like it.

Nap1983 · 18/05/2023 11:55

all a bit 90s but I prefer Melissa. Vanessa seems really middle aged woman and Marissa would be confused for Melissa.

FayCarew · 18/05/2023 13:19

Ness is cool

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2023 13:25

Vanessa - v underusedand nice nns

Melissa is OK if slightly insipid - but Mel is a horrible nn

Marissa / Maresa are ok but bit nothingy I think - Marina or Maria better bets (I prefer them to Vanessa)

ourflagmeansdeath · 18/05/2023 17:33

I quite like Vanessa, I don't really think of it as dated. Melissa's okay too I guess, not as keen on Marissa.

Peachbubble · 18/05/2023 17:51

Marissa
Vanessa

Melissa

Love Marissa, like Vanessa, but not keen on Melissa, especially when it's shortened to Mel.

BebbanburgIsMine · 18/05/2023 20:11

Melissa is the nicest. Not keen on the other two.

I hate names being shortened I have two DDs who also hate their names being shortened, so your DD won't necessarily be called Mel.

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/05/2023 20:53

I really like Melissa, there is one in my dds preschool class.

Marissa is nice too though comes across as a bit princessy to me in a way Melissa doesn't.

All the Vanessa's I know are in their late 30s or 40s so it feels a bit dated to me. Nessie is a cute nickname though

Have you considered Clarissa or Viola? I think they have a similar feel

DramaAlpaca · 18/05/2023 21:14

I like Vanessa best, but the others are nice too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/05/2023 21:42

Of the 3, Marissa - I like the sea meaning and it's quite pretty and unusual.

While Vanessa perhaps feels very slightly dated, it would be a close second choice as I really love it's literary links.

3rd choice Melissa - pretty enough (if maybe a bit 90's feeling) but like others I'd be concerned the not-so -nice "Mel" nn would be automatic.

However ,if I could make a suggestion? I love the uncommon Shakespearean Nerissa more than all of them- to me it's very elegant and romantic feeling. Plus Nerissa has the nice sea meaning of Marissa, with the "Nessa" nn of Vanessa too (or pretty "Neri" as an alternative).

Elspethelf · 19/05/2023 06:12

Marissa

user1492757084 · 19/05/2023 06:53

Vanessa I prefer, and Nessa.
Have you thought of Cressida or Clarissa?
Agnes or Bess?

Topazbutterfly · 19/05/2023 10:18

I'm not very keen on Vanessa but I think both Melissa and Marissa are lovely names. It's difficult to pick between them because they're both really nice. If you intend to use nicknames, maybe think which of those you prefer, probably Mel, Mela or Lissa or Marie, Maria or RIssa, that might help you decide

cordelia16 · 19/05/2023 13:14

Missy is used as a nn for Melissa more often than Mel is, ime.

I like Marissa best of the three. I've recently met a teen call Arissa, which I think is very pretty.

FayCarew · 19/05/2023 13:45

Arissa sounds like a chilli paste that you might put in a tagine

Teawithnosugarplease · 19/05/2023 16:51

My firstborn (way back in 1999!) would have been Melissa if he'd been a girl.
However, by the time my daughter arrived a few years later I had moved on to other names I liked so didn't use it in the end.
I still like it, but like others have said it just feels a bit dated now. If you could avoid the "Mel" nn it would be okay. I like Lissy/ Lissie.

I would say Marissa is my favourite of the 3.
I also love Clarissa as an alternative.

I like the sound of Vanessa, but most of them are my age (40's) and that sort of puts me off.
I like Janessa (one of Disney's 12 Dancing Princesses), although I've never actually heard it in real life.
