Thinking of possible baby names with DH, which one do you prefer, Ivy-Mae or Merhat-Mae (Merhat is DH's gran's name)?

Bit random maybe but how about Meryam? (Pronounced merry-am) with ivy or May as a middle name? I know a little girl with this name and I think it’s lovely - and as the first part is Mer it would be an homage to your gran in law.

Swingbop · 18/05/2023 08:17

Ivy is lovely. I can’t see the word ‘Merhat’ without saying Meerkat in my head. Mae is very dated.

I would go with plain old Ivy.

DrHousecuredme · 18/05/2023 08:22

Yep, agree with pp... both lovely names but lose the -mae element it's awful with them both and pretty much with any name tbh.

Am I the only one who thinks they are all awful names?

Nope 🤣

If you Google Merhat, this thread comes up plus one male radio broadcaster. Ancestry indicates it's surname. Is this even real? It's an ugly name either way.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2023 13:35

No hyphen, no Mae in combination - both are dire

Ivy Merhat

Merhat is not a lovey name, so not as a first

Merhat-Mae? Is your surname Gandhi?

This was my thought also

Not just you no. Ivy is horrible as well.

Dazedandbemused0 · 18/05/2023 14:58

Nothing-Mae

Dazedandbemused0 · 18/05/2023 14:59

Ivy is nice but too common now. Merhat is… odd. Not a nice sound.

I think this is a joke thread. Someone thinking up the silliest two names possible and testing for reactions.

Surely there's nothing odd about Ivy or Mae? They're both really common.

Elspethelf · 19/05/2023 04:28

My vote is Ivy Merhat

abmac95 · 19/05/2023 04:42

Ivy _ nice

Merhat sounds a bit like Meerkat - like the advert. I wouldn't, even if it had been my grans name.

user1492757084 · 19/05/2023 04:44

Merhat Ivy or Ivy Merhat.
I love that you are using a family name.

How is Merhat pronounced .. MER-at or Mer-HAT or Mert?

Do you like Minerva? Minnie.

ActDottie · 19/05/2023 05:10

Lose the tacky hyphen!!!

hattie43 · 19/05/2023 05:10

Just Ivy , it's very pretty

Am I the only one who thinks they are all awful names?

Nope. And no one has a clue how to actually pronounce Merhat. I've never heard of it. Out of the two, it's the worst.

MysteryBelle · 19/05/2023 05:25

Merhat is too close to meerkat. Or, that’s mer hat you’re tramplin.

Ivy is pretty.

Mae, May, Lee, and Lynn are fillers for middle names and I’ve never liked them. Plus Mae gives slight evocation of the Clampetts in the Beverly Hillbillies.

TheseThree · 19/05/2023 05:30

FayCarew · 17/05/2023 18:23

Ivy Merhat or Merhat Ivy
May is a filler middle name.

Exactly what I thought too. If there is a special reason to include Mae then figure it out without a hyphen.

Bournetilly · 19/05/2023 05:55

Ivy Merhat.
Or if you really want to include Mae then have Mae as a middle name.

notsurewherenotsurewhy · 19/05/2023 06:16

OP: "I'm thinking of using this name, which was DH's gran's..."
MN: "It's so ugly, it's not a real name, I've just googled and it doesn't exist, here are several arsehole uncle jokes about it."

🙄

It wouldn't be open season on a not-so-chic granny name from the UK, like Enid or Edna.

handydandynotebook · 19/05/2023 06:30

Unless Mae is a family name please don't use it!

Don't be ridiculous. It's not "too close to meerkat"
