Lewinna/Lewenna/Lewina

A family name and an old saint’s name - Lewinna was the first female saint of Sussex. I love the nickname ‘Winnie’ - I’ve always wanted a Winnie! Is Lewinna useable as a first name with nickname Winnie? Or is one of the other spellings better? Or would you go for Winnie as a stand-alone name? DH has a relative Winifred who it would be nice to honour as well if we used Winnie as the full name - two birds with one stone! Couldn’t use Winifred as the full name as Lewinna is more important to us for sentimental reasons.

I think it’s lovely. My best friend has a version with a different spelling. Winnie is cute too.

Thank you for your reply! Glad that you like it! 😊 How does your friend spell it? And which spelling do you prefer?

I went to school with a Lewenna, she was an absolute orifice, so for me it's got poor connections. Having said that, it's actually a very pretty name.
I knew a few girls growing up with the nick name 'Winnie' one was a Winifred, She was ace, and one was a Gwen(dolyn) she was pretty cool too.

‘Absolute orifice’ is great 😂

She’s a Leweinna but I think I prefer Lewinna.

I think if it were me I would go for the “original” /traditional spelling which I presume is lewinna. Lewina will perhaps be more recognisable to people though and less likely to be mispronounced but I think it’s nice to go old skool original. A great name 👍🏻

I like the spelling Lowena, like Rowena! Perhaps Lowenna to avoid pronunciation ambiguity? Lewinna looks more made up to me, although I know it isn't. Winnie is a natural nickname for either spelling.

Thank you for your comment! I adore the Lowenna spelling and searched for it online but was disappointed to read that it’s a totally separate name - a Cornish name, apparently, meaning ‘joy’. Which is absolutely gorgeous but loses the link to the saint (her name was Lewinna, which is apparently the Latin version of the Saxon name Leofwynn which has a different meaning). Alternate spellings of this name are Lewina or Lewenna, neither of which I like quite as much as Lowenna, but would like to keep the link to the Sussex saint who our family member was named after

Thank you! Yea I’m feeling like maybe the original spelling is the best and the one I should stick to if I actually want the links that I want 😊

👍🏻 definitely the right decision then to get all the links and origins you wanted

I would go with Winnie as a stand alone name. I do really like Lewinna too, the original spelling
