Used DD1 middle name as a first name for DD2.
I have tried to find another name for DD2 that I love as much but keep going back to DD1 middle name as it has sentimental meaning. Would this be seen as strange or should I give DD2 a variation/longer form of the name and the shortened version as a known name.

SIL & BIL have 3 DC. Their DS1's middle name is DS2's first name. Their DD has the feminised version of FIL's name. The family is big on recycling names.

If I had my sisters middle name as my first name I'd think it was a bit weird. I know people who do this because it's a name after someone else though.

DuchessOfSausage · 11/05/2023 10:34

We did it a little bit. DS has a version of DH's name as a middle name (something like Jackson where DH is John known as Jack) and DD has her great grandma's childhood nickname as her first name.

Blokahouse21 · 11/05/2023 10:36

@ComeTheFuckOnBridgett yes this is the case, the name is after someone. There is a longer version which could be used for formal purposes but shortened everyday to the middle name of DD1

Is it Rose?

Mbop · 11/05/2023 10:54

William and Kate did with Louis and it's also one of Camillas grandsons names

I think this is fine. I know people who've done this and it makes sense to me. You don't really know if you'll ever have two kids, let alone two of the same sex. So, in case you only have one, you use your next favourite name as their middle name. But, then dc2 is also a girl, and you still love that middle name as its your second favourite name of all time. I can see how this happens. My friend has her sister's middle name as her first name and says its a nice link between the two of them as they have different surnames. If you love it and think your daughter will also like having it as her name, I would go for it.

If I was DD1 and decided I wanted to change my name as an older child or teenager, then I don't have the option of using my middle name.

If I was DD2 I would probably think there was a bit of lazy parenting here, that you couldn't be bothered to find me a name that was all my own.

I speak with some experience here, my first name is to honour my aunt, my middle name is to honour my mother, I am reasonably sure my dad had the deciding vote here. DB1 was given the same name as my dad and my cousin. DB2 was given the same name as my uncle. DB3 got lucky and got a name that is all his own, there is no confusion about which person is needed when his name is called. I hate my name, it's a perfectly lovely name but I hate having to share it with such a close family member. There was such confusion when my aunt lived with us for a number of years when I was little, to this day she will answer questions that I am pretty certain were addressed to me.

Please look harder, there are so many lovely names out there, you will find a special one for your daughter. So the name is sentimental to you, find another sentimental name.

If you want to be brave and tell us DD1's names, then I'm sure someone will be along soon to suggest a lovely match.

@Mbop , was I too subtle?

riotlady · 11/05/2023 11:18

My parents used a variation of my middle name for my sister (it’s also my mums middle name) and don’t think anybody ever thought it was weird. It’s not like I use my middle name a lot anyway

doris9034 · 11/05/2023 11:27

@DuchessOfSausage 😂

Mbop · 11/05/2023 11:44

@doris9034 and @Mbop , I thought "The family is big on recycling names." was quite good Smile
