Ffion, Zoe, Alexandra or Isabella?

SpaceHopperHayls · 18/02/2008 13:27

Ffion is currently the frontrunner, especially as I am due to give birth the day after St David's Day. We are Welsh but currently living in Oxfordshire, which is why we'd like a Welsh name.

I'm still being drawn by the other three though. Bloke doesn't like Isabella - our surname starts with a B, and he thinks it sounds a bit clunky.

Any opinions welcomed, please!

And I don't know how to pronounce Ffion either .

collision · 18/02/2008 19:15

none of them!

Not keen on Ffion or Zoe at all.

Alexandra and Isabelle are quite common and will be shortened...Alex and Belle.....

harpsichordcarrier · 18/02/2008 19:16

Alexandra is my favourite. classic and she can shorten it to Alex or Lexie or Sandy or anything else she likes
Isabella is very close to lots of other popular names at the moment. Zoe I don't mind but it isn't as lovely as Alexandra
Ffion doesn't translate too well to Oxon imo

collision · 18/02/2008 19:16

bookworm.....it is Fee-yon.

bookwormmum · 18/02/2008 19:20

Ah, that is pretty. I'd bet that a few people might struggle to spell or pronounce it outside of Wales though.

MsCD · 18/02/2008 19:24

Having been one of 5 Catherine's in my class I allways wanted a name that was different. Chose Ava for DD then Mylene followed suit - oh well.
Having said that maybe you should wait until she arrives and see which name suits her best. Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

We did the kick test last night, and baby seems to prefer Ffion

From the names you've given here, I only really like Alexandra

GooseyLoosey · 19/02/2008 08:45

I like Isabella. I'm afraid Ffion brings to mind William Hague's wife, Irish dh also says he would pronounce it "Finn".

However, you go with what best suits you. My dcs have very Irish names and I am sure that there are many English people who think that they are God awful.

indignatio · 19/02/2008 08:51

Listen to Anna - Ffion really doesn't travel well - especially to France

TwoFirTreesToday · 19/02/2008 13:10

Try saying Dr Zoe (etc) Surname out loud to each other What middle names do you have?

My daughter is Alexandra

3andnomore · 19/02/2008 13:30

I would go for Zoe ...like the others aswell...but Zoe is so pretty and hardly used, I think...

Heathcliffscathy · 19/02/2008 13:32

not ffion (william hague associations). zoe nice. not alexandra (reminds me of nutty piano teacher i once had) isabella nice.

Fillyjonk · 19/02/2008 13:34

I like Ffion BUT

I am in Wales

a pattern is definately emerging here. I think I am right in saying that every poster who has liked it has a welsh connection?

Its not an unusual name at all here, I know 3 preschool ffions.

mrsruffallo · 19/02/2008 13:36

iSABELLA IS THE ONLY ONE i LIKE

Given that the OP lives in Oxforshire, does it really matter if Ffion travels well to France???

Heathcliffscathy · 19/02/2008 13:39

oooooo ooooo ooooo, if you call her alexandra you can shorten it to lexie which i LOVE (saw it on other thread).

dizzydixies · 19/02/2008 18:12

I have an Isabella, known as Ella and an
Alexandra known as Lexie so my vote is for them!

tassisssss · 19/02/2008 18:14

I love the name Zoe

Not wild on the others, though could live with Isabella.

Fiona is lovely...not keen on Ffion

oxocube · 19/02/2008 18:14

I love Zoe

Hulababy · 19/02/2008 18:21

From the list I prefer, in order, Isabella, Alexandra, Zoe, Ffion.

lizziemun · 19/02/2008 18:57

I like the following

Alexandra (dd2 name ) but seems to be very popular at the moment.

Zoe (or Zowie as per my hairdresser)

Not keen on

Isabella or Ffion.

berolina · 19/02/2008 18:59

Isabella is gorgeous. Alexandra is a good strong name. Zoe is okay. Don't like Ffion much.

JossStick · 19/02/2008 19:05

Alexandra is a fine name.

And Alex is quite sexy in a grown woman i think .
