I’m so confused about how your surname is pronounced because mass and pass don’t actually rhyme?! Or at least not in my accent! But I think 2 many S’s with Austin so if has to be one of those 2 then I’d go with Carter.

Some people have different accents than your own personal accent.

alexdgr8 · 06/05/2023 17:31

can't you choose a proper first name, rather than using a surname as a first name.
the actual surname is unusual and many people will think it is mason.
so that will cause an issue.
all the more reason to pick a definite first name rather than another surname.

🤣 yes obviously! That’s why I said at least not in my accent and that’s why I am confused as to how OP pronounces it because it’s very obvious that she has a different accent to me.

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2023 17:33

Love Austin, dislike Carter.

alexdgr8 · 06/05/2023 17:35

most southeners have never come across the name masson, and will have no idea how it is pronounced.
they will call him mr mason, and then get mixed up and think mason is his first name.
why don't you pick a definite first name, not confuse the issue by giving him another surname.

KirstenBlest · 06/05/2023 17:44

@alexdgr8 , it's not that unusual a name and it's pretty obvious how to say it.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 06/05/2023 18:35

I love Carter as a first name. Can't believe everyone is giving you stick over the surname, don't get a choice in that!

We actually really like surname style names for first names. I always find it quite modern and strong sounding. Each to their own on that of course!

I’m not overly worried that someone will think the surname is their first name. I’m more trying to just ensure we pick a first name that works well overall.

So it's pronounced Mah-son? That's an interesting name I've not heard before.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 06/05/2023 18:43

Of the two Austin. Then you put it with the middle name and it sounds like someone drunkenly trying to say Austin Martin. Think you need to consider this.

Define ‘proper first name’ because I know a few Austin’s and they are all lovely. It’s actually been on my list. Unfair to presume people will mispronounce their surname just because you aren’t sure how to say it.

I think the names nice and actually works well with the surname.

just my opinion though… 🙃

Skybluepinky · 06/05/2023 18:50

Msyb try ones that don’t sound like surnames, and def not Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine!

Hello, good evening, welcome...

Neither is to my taste unfortunately.

Well maybe she has one of the many different accents that pronounce the ‘a’ in pass flatly. I’m Scottish and they’re pronounced the same. I live in Lancashire and they’re the same. It’s not that hard to understand, so I’m not sure why you were ‘so confused.’

ladygindiva · 06/05/2023 20:00

I like Austin.

KirstenBlest · 06/05/2023 20:10

I use the short a sound too. Didn't cross my mind that the a in mass could be long

clpsmum · 06/05/2023 20:11

Love them both but prefer carter. Both lovely names. Unlike most mumsnetters I love surname names think they're really strong sounding

Ok so I didn’t make a conclusion OP was from Scotland or the north of England and then assume that she must pronounce pass a certain way, and therefore that must be how her surname is pronounced. Reading it back you could well be right and that would actually make a lot sense but due to the style of the names I thought that OP might be American so didn’t think of a British northern accent at all. You surely have to admit that saying it’s pronounced like ‘pass’ when there isn’t a standard pronunciation of pass is pretty confusing? And based on some of the other comments clearly I’m not the only one having trouble! Please don’t be offended.

I’m not offended at all. I just find it ridiculous how many people on mumsnet are incredulous and ‘genuinely confused’ by the fact that not everyone is the same as themselves.

That is correct. Not such an unusual name where we are from!

I’ve nothing against names that are typically surnames. I love Grayson and like Spencer.

Wow I think you’ve misunderstood me! I was just saying I was confused because there isn’t a standard pronunciation of ‘pass’ because yes people are different and accents exist so it really wasn’t clear. And apparently it’s Mah-son anyway which sounds more southern English to me, so yes rhymes with pass to southerners but in that accent it is not the same as mass.

OP now that you’ve clarified the pronunciation, thank you for that and sorry for being confused (!), I would like to change my vote and I think that Austin would be great! No too S heavy with your surname at all.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 07/05/2023 07:45

Out of the two I prefer Austin. I know a teen one and he's lovely. Did meet a very cute baby Carter the other week though...Wink

cordelia16 · 08/05/2023 20:45

Austin is a nice name, but Austin Masson does not sound good together at all imo. Even beyond the Astin Martin feel, it's much too sing-songy with too many S and N sounds.
