Is Juliet too tragic?

Or is it just fine?

How do you pronounce it?

jooleeET or more like JOOleeet?

I think Juliette takes away the tragic Shakespeare association but I find it a bit frilly and the correct French pronunciation doesn't include an English J but more a French ZH-sound so not sure if using it feels right.

I like jooleeET better, but JOOleeet seems more common, am I right?

Sorry, I meant JOO-lee-et vs. joo-lee-ET, to make it clear.

A beautiful name and definitely not too tragic.

People get really hung up on ‘tragic’ Shakespearean characters, but Juliet was a name before the character and either way I think it definitely has more romantic connotations than tragic

LightDrizzle · 03/05/2023 11:18

Nooo! It’s a lovely name.

RosaSkye · 03/05/2023 11:19

Also I think I say JOO- Li-et

I also both spellings but would personally go for Juliet

its gorgeous

DuchessOfSausage · 03/05/2023 11:19

JOO-li-et, but lots will say it to rhyme with serviette.
Not too tragic IMO.

squigglesquirrel · 03/05/2023 11:21

Juliet is a great name!!

Less keen on Juliette although Juliette Binoche is awesome

SneezyEvie · 03/05/2023 12:25

Not at all.

Juliet I would pronounce JU-liet

Juliette I would pronounce Juli-ETTE

DogInATent · 03/05/2023 12:33

It's a lot less tragic than Ophelia which always seems to be popular with MNers.

ourflagmeansdeath · 03/05/2023 19:40

No, it's a lovely name

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/05/2023 22:12

Nah it’s very popular

in the UK I always hear it said JU-lee-et ie Julie with an et on the end, even those spelt Juliette, so don’t use it if you want the French pronunciation (which would be massacred by many UK accents anyway)

PickledScrump · 03/05/2023 22:20

juliet would generally be emphasis on the “ju”
Juliette would be emphasis on the “ette”
Saying that I tend to put emphasis on the et/ette on both ways

Personally I prefer Juliette spelling

Epicstorm · 03/05/2023 22:30

It’s a lovely name and I’d spell it Juliet.

lordloveadog · 03/05/2023 22:33

Such a good name!

doeandfawn · 04/05/2023 08:16

It’s a beautiful name! They will get some people reference the play in their life but it’s not the first place everyone’s brain will go.

Blended central Scots and northern Irish accent here and Joo-li-ET is the only one that sounds right. JOO-li-et feels like it might be the English pronunciation? Think it depends on where you’re based!

Blue2020 · 04/05/2023 08:43

No, alternatives could be Julie or Julia. I know both with these names.

XBealtaine · 04/05/2023 08:46

I like it. Agree with your take I prefer Jooliet to JuliETTE but the latter removes the shakespeare associaation. I'd still pick Juliet though.

GremlinDolphin4 · 04/05/2023 09:07

I’ve got a Juliet! It’s a great name. Xx

CoalCraft · 04/05/2023 18:16

I knew a Juliet in school. Emphasis was on the last syllable. I didn't know her well but she struck me as very confident and a bit fierce; not tragic at all!

avocadotofu · 04/05/2023 18:17

I think it's a beautiful classic name. I know one in her 30s and she's lovely.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/05/2023 18:18

It’s an excellent name.

But just in case try not to go to war with a neighbouring family.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/05/2023 18:23

It's an extremely pretty classic name and was on my list of 3 girls names when I had my son!!

I would pronounce it Julie et

TurquoiseDress · 04/05/2023 18:27

I love the name Juliette

Spelt that way

Cleebope2 · 04/05/2023 18:28

Not too tragic. Beautiful. And the Beckhams have a Romeo so if it’s good enough for them lol.

user1492757084 · 05/05/2023 05:32

Juliet is not too tragic though it seems more dramatic than the more casual Julie and Julia.

There are also Juleen, Julienne and Juliana
