I know someone with a Theodore who was nicknamed Teddy. He prefers Theo so is called that now, but said there were a couple of others in his school.

Lots of teddies round here. I do wonder how they will be perceived in a professional environment, if there’s lots of them though it will just be normal I guess.

BambinoBlue · 03/05/2023 10:28

Stupidly popular. I'm a registrar and I am tickled by the thought that in 15 years time there will be so many strapping local teenagers in the area, all called Teddy 😁

But I guess it will just become the norm.

Edward, Edmund or Theodore on the birth certificate would be better imo. Then use whatever nickname you like, and that can change if it bothers him.

CornishGem1975 · 03/05/2023 10:32

I imagine they'll just be Ted @BambinoBlue which isn't really that out there.

I guess, maybe.

But that's about all it could become. It can't easily be a Theo or an Eddie or an Ed or a Ned though from what's already a diminutive so it does cut out options.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/05/2023 10:59

What @AtlasSix posted. Not only is Teddy #26 but there will be Teddys who are registered as Edward, Theodore, Edmund, Ted etc.

SparkyBlue · 03/05/2023 11:03

I do like it but it's one of those names that won't work with all adults so I'd definitely go with Edward. Personally I'd prefer Eddie to Teddy

Snugglemonkey · 03/05/2023 11:56

I think it is sweet. I would probably go with Theodore and nn Teddy. I have only met 1 Teddy.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 03/05/2023 11:57

Around here it's very very popular

@CalloohCallayFrabjousDay teddy bear 😂🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

I know! Poor kid 😂

Ellemeg82 · 03/05/2023 14:56

Popular where I live. Several in my sons class at school and there were 4 at his preschool!

A couple were just Teddy on the birth certificate but the others were Edward.

Personally I'd call him Edward and use Teddy/Ted as a nickname. Then he has the option of a more classic name.

thegreylady · 03/05/2023 16:04

My dgs is Edward. He was Teddy as a toddler, Ted when he started school and now , at 14, very definitely Ed or occasionally Edward.

Abouttimemum · 03/05/2023 16:09

There’s a Ted in my son’s nursery, just Ted, not short for anything and not called Teddy (although you could if you wanted) I love it, with his surname it just sounds strong and simple. He’s the only one I know.

I don’t think Teddy suits an adult, personally.

FirstFallopians · 03/05/2023 16:09

Another one here who likes it but would register as Edward or Theodore.

If I really didn’t like one of the “Sunday Names” I’d actually just register as Ted and use Teddy as a childhood nickname.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/05/2023 16:12

I'm in North West. Don't know any personally but hear alot at parks, soft play, toddler group. Part of me loves it but part of me sees it as a pet dogs name!

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/05/2023 22:34

It’s enormously popular

It’s sweet though. However do call him Theodore or Edward/Edwin/Edmund so he has a more grown up option later. Or Thaddeus I guess..

TheUsualChaos · 03/05/2023 22:41

It's cute but just don't understand having names like Teddy / Bobby / Billy on the birth certificate. Use it as a nickname but as a teenager/adult they may want the option of the original version of the name. Having said that perhaps in 20, 30 years time it will just be v normal for their generation. But to me, sounds cute for a toddler, bit odd sounding for an adult.

SoShallINever · 03/05/2023 23:53

Every second cockerpoo near us is called this.

GreenCereal · 04/05/2023 00:08

My Teddy is already known as just Ted half the time, which is a standard middle aged man’s name, so I think he’ll be fine as a professional.
In saying that, my own name gets brought up all the time on MN as one that doesn’t suit an adult, but it really hasn’t hindered me at all. People just get used to it, and all the Teddy’s will be surrounded by people their own age to whom the name seems normal.
