I have a dog called Heidi who is mostly just Heidi, but sometimes Heidles or (by DH) Heidelberg 🙄

WouldYouLikeACrabPuff · 30/04/2023 21:03

@Garman 😂😂

quietnightmare · 30/04/2023 21:04

My friend gets called ho

APurpleSquirrel · 30/04/2023 21:05

Honestly @pancakesandpepsi as a child I had a love/hate relationship with my name - I loved that I wasn't one of 6 Emma's but hated not every finding anything with my name on - the named kids stuff you'd get in tourist shops. I'd look in vain for a Heidi. The first time I actually found one was I was 25 & at the Coca-Cola shop in Vegas - a keyring & yes I bloody well bought it & have kept it every since.
As an adult it's been fine. I've met a few more Heidi's & to me it's just a bit meh as a name. Find it fascinating to see others described it variously as lovely or awful!

@APurpleSquirrel thanks so much for the insight!

I love my name. I’m half Swiss so have always been very proud of my name.
Sometimes I’d be called Heidili (the li added on makes it little Heidi iirc in Switzerland).

The Heidi Hi nickname used to be relentless, when Hi-de-hi was popular, or people would hum the theme tune of Heidi to me, which I didn’t mind, and I always wanted goats (and one day will have them and call them Little Swan and Little Bear).

You recall correctly. Heidili is little Heidi in most Swiss German dialects. (Heideli would work as well btw. Heideli would technically be incorrent but sounds a bit more natural/intuitive to me personally. But I really don't know why....🤔probably depends on the dialect)

I always think this when I see people say x name with y nickname.

Nicknames come into being over a period of time. Both my kids have nicknames nothing to do with their names, one occasionally is called a nickname from her name but its mainly the 1 nickname that no one else would know what their real name was.

This concept of choosing nicknames before the child is even born perplexes me, it really does. Surely the whole point of nicknames is that they develop because if a quirk, trait or habit? They aren't the same as a diminutive, say Sal for Sally or Jack for John.

A nickname is being known as Trev, despite the fact that your name is Shane or being called Kid by everyone when your name is Harold and you are 67.

Buebananas · 01/05/2023 13:58

Heidi IS already a nickname for Adelheid.

It's so short and honestly doesn't need any further shortening imo

FayCarew · 01/05/2023 14:07

@LadyMonicaBaddingham , it's not a bad idea to consider the 'nicknames' before naming the baby.
The 'nickname' will evolve, but if, for example, you detested a diminutive, you'd be able to choose an alternative.

An example might be something like Elliott might be called Elsie, or being aware that a Tate might get called Tato.

Buebananas · 01/05/2023 14:08

Or a William getting called Willy Blush

Mischyf1 · 01/05/2023 14:24

I'm a Heidi and I get Heidi Hi or Heidi ho or both in a sing song voice 🙄 I've also been called Heid (didn't like it)
I've also been called Heidi Hey or weirdly, Hayleigh, which I do much prefer over my actual name.
My mum was nuts for the TV series and planned to name her first daughter Heidi. But her first "Just didn't look like Heidi" so I was ...blessed with the name instead.
My closest friends soon pick up a pet name or a made up name for me, like Trouble or Sweet or literally any other thing on earth cus I cant help but pull a face at every Heidi 😅 I'd change it but my mother would murder me.

Rosecoffeecup · 01/05/2023 14:42

I knew a Heidi who went by Eddie. I'd have just stuck with Heidi tbh.

Fandabedodgy · 01/05/2023 14:44

Just call her Heidi

No nickname needed

FayCarew · 01/05/2023 16:05

@Fandabedodgy , but other people will lengthen or shorten it.

DustyLee123 · 01/05/2023 16:05

Dee-Dee

Monkeytapper · 01/05/2023 16:06

I have a Heidi, I liked the name as it couldn’t really be shortened

Fandabedodgy · 01/05/2023 17:02

FayCarew · 01/05/2023 16:05

@Fandabedodgy , but other people will lengthen or shorten it.

And you just correct them and say 'the names Heidi'

FayCarew · 01/05/2023 20:27

You can do that but some people will persist., @Fandabedodgy .
I speak from experience (think Faydy, Faith, Fayster, Fayola, Faze...)

alotoftutus · 01/05/2023 21:38

My daughter is Heidi and I just love it.
She occasionally gets called Heids or Heid but is mainly Heidi
