Hi,

I have a daughter -and we will move UK soon. My daughers name is Demi- actually we love her name, she loves it too. its lovely name where we live but I am worrying that she might get bullied when we move to UK because its not a common name in UK.

Please share what you thing about this.
Am I over thinking?

She might end up hating her name, but I’d say that no matter what the name was. You can’t control which names your child will grow up to hate. Demi in the UK is a bit of a dated name. I went to school with a fair few Demis and it’s been declining in popularity since. It’s probably that you’ll meet a few school mums called Demi.

PickledScrump · 26/04/2023 12:29

I know of loads of Demis, they’re all in their 20s now. It’s not uncommon, perhaps a bit dated now. But no one will comment on it

nevermindtime · 26/04/2023 13:37

Demi peaked in 1996, it was 79th most popular name. So there are thousands of young women name Demi. Besides Moore, younger generations will know of Demi Lovato. She won't be bullied!

I understand that Demi isa relatively new name— Demi Moore claims her mother actually made the name up because she liked French sounding names. However she’s now approaching elderly so the names been around long enough for people to have become used to it.
Ive never heard any criticism of the name so you have nothing to worry about.
I hope you find your adjustment to living here easy.

Short for Demeter or Demetria, isn’t it? Greek, not wildly uncommon.

ourflagmeansdeath · 26/04/2023 17:33

It's fine, it's a fairly common name in the UK. If you love it then it's okay

Stephhh87 · 26/04/2023 17:36

I love the name :)

Fuerza · 26/04/2023 17:38

I'd use a full name. Demetria is a good choice.
Demi has a dairy product feel to it. Demi desnatada.

JamSandle · 26/04/2023 17:46

Lovely name.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 26/04/2023 18:10

I thought you were going to say something awful!
Demi isn’t that uncommon in the U.K.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/04/2023 20:54

Why would she be bullied?!

If it isn’t short for something people might think you’re a Demi Moore fan, but.. who cares?

July0707 · 26/04/2023 20:55

Thank you so much☺️ I feel better right now - she is already a bit upset and worried because of moving so I really don’t want her to feel sad in her new school xxx

There are lots of the in the UK def not unusual.

Changedname81 · 08/05/2023 10:55

If anything it’s a bit old fashioned as most I know are in their 30s. It’s definitely not that unusual, I don’t think you need to worry 😀

ConstanceReid · 08/05/2023 10:58

It’s really not an uncommon name.

we have an 11 year old Demi in our family. The only issue she has is people pronouncing it wrong. She gets ‘Demmy’ which she hates.

lljkk · 08/05/2023 11:10

Demi Vollering won final stage, came 2nd overall in GC, on Vuelta Feminina yesterday. So to me it's an athlete's name.... and not uncommon either.

She's Dutch so pronounced DAYmee.

Ladysquamy · 08/05/2023 12:38

It makes me think of ordering a demi bouteille of wine in France but that's not a bad association.

onthefence23 · 08/05/2023 16:47

I know two! Never thought it was uncommon I think she'll be fine!

Lavenderheys · 08/05/2023 16:48

It’s a lovely name and is neither common or unheard of either in the uk.

Hopingforno2in2023 · 08/05/2023 16:51

My brother’s ex was Demi, I’m not aware of anyone batting an eyelid at the name.

GeraltsBathtub · 08/05/2023 16:52

I went to school in the U.K. with two Demis, it’s fine.

That's the logical way to pronounce Demi, especially if you have knowledge of French.

I guess if it's short for Demitria then you might put the emphasis on the second syllable, but in its shortened form people aren't going to know whether it's a standalone name or not so will likely opt for Demmy.

yarikq · 09/05/2023 08:41

I knew a Demi at school. It's not that rare, and I don't think anyone would have problems with it, unless you pronounce it in a very different way from the typical British pronunciation.

DanceMonster · 09/05/2023 08:45

I have a relative called Demi (U.K.)

Pammy28 · 04/10/2023 01:34

Over thinking, It's a wonderful name!

Coyoacan · 04/10/2023 01:44

Bullies like to pick on what you are worried about, so it could be a nose, the colour of your hair, whatever.

My dd has an unusual name but she just thought that the jokes her friends made about her name were funny and came home laughing about them.
