Baby name same as pet

We are expecting our first baby in July. I think we must've considered close to every name in existence, we keep going around in circles. A lot of the names we like, but don't love.

The only name we both love is the name of our cat - Hugo. I had initially ruled it out for the reasons below but we can't seem to shake it. Cat Hugo is a house cat and doesn't have many friends, but close family & friends are aware of his name being Hugo. As is he, not that he ever listens. He is only 2 so hopefully will be around a while.

I'm having major regrets about calling Cat Hugo, Hugo and wish we could use it for the baby. When asked for opinions, close family have said it wouldn't bother them, and to either keep Cat Hugo as Hugo or call him something different. I get that he's unlikely to care. If the baby/anyone else suggested that they're named after the cat I'd have no issue in putting them straight that we just loved the name, it's not a case of being named after a cat. I'm more concerned about whether people will find this a really weird/unacceptable thing to do. Part of me feels like it's hard enough to find a name we both love, and we should go for it, and the other part just feels as though we should leave Hugo as the cat and go for one of the other names we reasonably like.

The other names, for info, are:

Max - although we (myself & DP) both had a childhood dog called Max. Both deceased.
George - really like it but not sure it's the one.
Rory - nice but too common where we are
Henry - also nice but I don't love it

Help!🚨

U seem to like cartoon/kids character and pet names
Max - dog name
George - Pepa pigs brother
Rory - the tiger at Haven
Henry- the mild mannered janitor ftom Hong Kong phowey.

Even though the cat's nicknames are, as you put it, less polite, I think you should swop his day-to-day name to one of those

lostinmaze · 25/04/2023 18:51

Call.your car Ludo which sounds similar, and call your baby Hugo. The cat won't care, After a few days of saying it to your baby it will all seem normal

MopsySmithe · 25/04/2023 19:11

Change the cat's name and call your baby Hugo!!! ☺️

what a horrid suggestion to rename your cat. the poor thing is just going to be shoved aside because you've decided you want his name for someone more deserving. if youre that desperate to use the name they can share it. name the baby Hugo II

Jeez calm down. The cat isn't going to have any idea that his name has changed is he.

We renamed the dog that we rehomed. Hated the name Sky, we called her Thelma and she seems to like it. I don’t think a cat would mind either.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2023 20:16

Change the cat's name to his full name - Victor Hugo.

Name your baby the name you love.

Or would you consider-
Ivo
Leo
Louis

Yummymummy2020 · 25/04/2023 20:28

We are in a similar situation😂 one name we love but is the same as a relatives dead dog from years ago😂 to be fair though I had the name planned before the dog came on the scene 😂 it’s probably a bit more akward when it’s your own pet but in reality your pet won’t be around as long as your child🤷🏼‍♀️ So I would go for it especially given said cat is not attached to his name😂😂😂

LadyMcLadyface · 25/04/2023 20:30

My friend named her daughter after her beloved dog, really don't think it's a big deal. Just have Cat Hugo and Baby Hugo!

Mammyofonlyone · 25/04/2023 20:42

fizzypencils · 25/04/2023 17:21

@neverknowinglyunreasonable 😂 well that would certainly be one way to make sure it’s not a top 10 name!

If that's your aim, I'm sorry to say all of your choices would be on the top ten list in our school! Maybe Whiskers is a goer?!?

fizzypencils · 25/04/2023 20:54

@Mammyofonlyone Max, George, Henry and Hugo really aren’t popular where we are in Scotland. Rory is #9 apparently!

It’s really hard to find a name that’s not a pet name in some way or another as most pets nowadays have human names - there’s less Fido and Whiskers and more Dave the Pug, Frank, Stanley, etc

Well yes but using your own pets name is something else entirely 😆

Swansandcustard · 25/04/2023 21:20

Hugo is the Steven of 2023. Allow your cat king to keep his name and call your baby Tiddles

Spanielsarepainless · 25/04/2023 21:37

A friend named her son after her horse...

unicornjewels · 25/04/2023 21:49

I have a cat called Hugo too and like it for a a baby too. I think I'd have to change the cat's name if using it for the baby.

lottie2888 · 25/04/2023 21:55

So long as you specify human Hugo or cat Hugo when you call then it won’t be a problem!
I think it’s brilliant. I’d totally want to be friends with someone who called their baby the same name as their cat.

twizzlet · 25/04/2023 21:56

Nobody mentioned Indiana Jones yet?
"You were named after the dog?!"
"I have very fond memories of that dog!"

As you were.

Blessedbethefruitz · 25/04/2023 22:17

@twizzlet Indiana is a fine name for anyone, boy, girl or faithful companion (not defensive at all, nor do I have a baby birth card with a similar sentiment ;) )!

OP, are there actually 10-ish boys per 100 named Rory in your region? So 2-3 per class? Leo is a great alternative imo if so.

Hugo would not be my preference, but cat Hugo and boy Hugo doesn't seem to be a huge issue to me...

twizzlet · 25/04/2023 22:28

Rename the cat Mewgo. (Or call the baby Newgo.)

Like a previous poster, I would definitely want to be friends with someone who named their baby after the cat.

Thatbloomindog · 25/04/2023 22:37

Hugo is fantastic name. Great choice.

here is my story. I never wanted children. Named my puppy my favourite ever girls name. Then 8 years later had a lovely baby girl. Dh refused to name her the same as DDog. Dog is now dead and daughter has my second favourite name ever.

given my time again I would definitely 100% name my daughter the same as the dog. No one at primary school or high school is going to know you have a cat called Hugo. Just give the cat a nickname. Like hughie or something and practice using it now.

caringcarer · 25/04/2023 22:41

If you call son Hugo won't cat come if you are calling your son?

alcquestion · 25/04/2023 22:45

We had a similar issue in that I adored the name we gave our new kitten. Little did I know that I was pregnant with a child of the same sex. Long story short, was gutted I couldn't use the kitten's name for DC (husband vetoed it anyway) because of it being 'taken', we came up with another name, and even though we ended up having to rehome the cat several months later, I'm very happy DC has the name they do now. And not the cat's!

I would keep brainstorming. Rupert? Ralph? Sebastian? Ellis? These were some of my other favourites so I always like to share as we didn't use them!

user1492757084 · 26/04/2023 06:40

Call the baby - Hugh or rename the cat - Huxley.

13Bastards · 26/04/2023 07:42

Cats don't give a shit what they are called (fairly sure mine think they are called fatty and dickhead rather than their actual names) I changed my residues name to something totally different in syllable's and sound, he quickly picked up on it.

Sorry cat Hugo, you're becoming Dave

Lemonyfuckit · 26/04/2023 09:15

I think you have your answer in your post OP, call the cat Cat Hugo (and baby Hugo Hugo or (Baby) Hugo). Problem solved Grin
