Thoughts on the name Rhys for a boy?

Popular Welsh name that doesn't seem to get mangled by non-Welsh speakers. I like it.

In Wales it's fairly common, but not to the point where every other boy is called Rhys. Also think the spelling is the better version because it's rarely mistaken for a surname.

Elspethelf · 24/04/2023 11:58

I like it a lot! I had a very specific preference for one syllable names ending in S when choosing my sons name. James, Miles, Rhys etc. I love the way they sound and no nicknames!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 24/04/2023 12:11

One of my favourites. Love it.

DarlingG · 24/04/2023 12:12

I really like it and like the other spellings too

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/04/2023 13:19

I like it

DacwMamYnDwad · 24/04/2023 16:53

I love it but know loads of them.
It doesn't sound like Rees in Welsh, and I don't like the Rees pronunciation.

thefamous5 · 24/04/2023 16:56

It's my sons middle name.

We aren't welsh but live in wales (we didn't live in wales when we chose it either!).

It's a lovely name

ourflagmeansdeath · 24/04/2023 17:35

I love Rhys!

Skybluepinky · 24/04/2023 18:16

Very popular lots of year 1-3 boys called it, if u don’t mind that, then go for it.

astarsheis · 24/04/2023 18:22

Lovely name

pfftt · 24/04/2023 19:48

Gosh. Universally liked. I think that's a mumsnet first!!

PickledScrump · 24/04/2023 20:04

I absolutely love it but I’m really put off that people pronounce it like Reece. Otherwise it would have been a strong contender for me.

Confused by this as I would pronounce Rhys and Reece the same way.

LilacSloth · 24/04/2023 20:09

Great name.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 24/04/2023 20:09

Yes I know a Rhys and it's pronounced Reece

Rh is letter in the Welsh alphabet, distinct from R. It sounds like saying ‘r’ and ‘h’ simultaneously. If you’ve ever heard a Scottish person pronounce the ‘h’ sound in ‘where’ or ‘what’ then it’s a similar principle.

Rhys is pronounced like Rhis. Shorter middle sound and harsher end sound than Reece

Chersfrozenface · 24/04/2023 20:18

The h in the Rh is pronounced in Welsh - that's why Rh is a separate letter from R in the Welsh alphabet.

There's also a difference in the way the y is pronounced between North and South Wales.

You can listen to the name being pronounced correctly on YouTube.

Hellocatshome · 24/04/2023 20:20

Ah thanks everybody I dont think I've ever heard Rhys pronounced correctly in real life but then I've never been to Wales so that's maybe why.

DacwMamYnDwad · 24/04/2023 20:24

What @ZoyaTheDestroyer said.

The RH is like saying R and H simultaneously, the Y is like the y in Bryn but longer, the S is just s, so Rhys and Rees don't really sound the same if only one letter out of three letters sounds the same.

There is no R in RHYS

Nice name - manly, bright and not twee.

Zo6789 · 26/04/2023 18:12

I like it but it will be pronounced Reece outside of Wales.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/04/2023 21:02

I really like a lot of Welsh names but not this one.. possibly because it rhymes with grease.. sorry!

Or at least that’s how it gets said in England, I should say..

BakewellGin1 · 26/04/2023 21:04

I love it and I only know two. One is 15 other is 7.
