Expecting DS1 in 5 days, recently on here I have silently watched all the hatred towards the name Francis (which is our front runner for DS)
It has really made me doubt our name choice , I know I should not let opinions influence my decision but hormones are obviously all over the place too.
I plan to introduce DS as Frankie

Please give me your honest opinions do we need to go back to the drawing board and find a different name

I don't see any reason to go back on a name that you love when it is a perfectly well established, solid boys' name. It wouldn't be on my shortlist if it was my child but there is nothing wrong with the name. I quite like it.

I think that unless you (general you) choose a name that is going to cause ridicule, offence or be so bizarrely unique that your child will want to crawl into a hole with embarrassment, then you should stick to your own opinion and give your child the name you love.

Ragruggers · 22/04/2023 20:36

Lovely name,we have a Frankie and it really suits him.

RobertaTheRotund · 22/04/2023 20:39

Nothing wrong with Francis or Frankie. There are a few Frankies around but they seem to be Franklin or Francesca!

WhatHoMarjorie · 22/04/2023 20:40

It's good to get opinions on a name, it can give insights that might not have occurred to you, but that doesn't mean you should retire a name that you and your partner love just because 7 out of 10 people on a Mumsnet thread said they didn't like it. Francis/Frankie is an absolutely fine name and not one that will give your child cause for embarrassment.

Hope all goes well for the birth! Flowers

orangeflags · 22/04/2023 20:41

It's lovely. Francis is a great name

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 22/04/2023 20:53

Don’t doubt yourself - Francis is a brilliant name!

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/04/2023 21:14

It’s a nice name!! Don’t doubt yourself because of strangers on the internet! I found it useful to get opinions on names, but it ultimately didn’t change my preferences.

Your daughter will thank you later if you chose something more interesting and less bland. If you like Francis consider Francesca or Florence. I think they’re prettier and have more of a flare.

Francis is a boys name. It’s Frances for a girl.

OP I love your name and Frankie is super cute.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/04/2023 12:25

Francis nn Frankie is great, and quite popular right now, so lots of other people DO like it

ladybug48 · 23/04/2023 12:31

Oh, I didn’t realize Francis was a boy’s name in that case, I think Francis is a good name for a boy.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/04/2023 12:36

I like Francis

fairycupcakes · 23/04/2023 12:50

Francis is a fine name!! Frankie a lovely nn. Go for it ☺️

KirstenBlest · 23/04/2023 17:01

@ladybug48 , OP says Expecting DS1 in 5 days,. Smile

It's fine, @Halberg2768 . Have you started several threads on it and found several negative posts?
Short of asking about a MN favourite name you will get negative comments on here, but it's a pleasant name.

Introduce him as "Frankie, Francis middlename surname".

frozencup · 23/04/2023 17:27

If you love the name go for it, with my dc's I picked theirs names and couldn't really give a toss what other people thought. I still love their names today.

Halberg2768 · 23/04/2023 18:16

@KirstenBlest no but I had read so many negative comments on MN about it being wet and feminine.
I am aware it is unisex but I always thought of it as a classic name not wet name

OP posts:
TescoFinestMyArse · 23/04/2023 19:25

I think Francis is a little damp but it's not a bad name. I wouldn't give it a second thought if I met a child Francis.

Frankie though I absolutely love!

ChunkyCheese · 23/04/2023 19:32

I think both names are great, don’t let others put you off.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 23/04/2023 19:50

I think it can be good asking opinions here but MN isn’t everything. My son’s name is well liked here but I’ve met people who I can tell don’t like it. There are also names I really dislike which get a good reception here. You’ll never please everyone.

As long as you like the name and you think your son won’t have issues then go for it.

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 23/04/2023 19:52

We know a couple of 4/5 year old Frankie's and I love it! Great name choice

KirstenBlest · 23/04/2023 19:59

@Halberg2768 , I don't think it's wet. I think Frank Sinatra, Frank Lampard or Frank Bruno. Frankie is a unisex as is Fran but Francis is a male saint's name.

If you look on here, you'd think that one of the top girl's names was Claudia, yet fewer than 100 were registered each year in the past decade.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 25/04/2023 23:39

Really don't like it. Went to school with one. He got teased about having a girly name.
Fred?

This..

Unsure why anyone would get teased about a unisex name. Female Charlie’s do not get teased or female Sam’s
Francis to me is no different

Love Francis, not at all keen on Frankie (it will date, badly).

People thinking Francis is 'wet' and 'feminine' (as if that were a bad thing) want to look at their internalised misogyny. They'd have the vapours over the Florians and Andreas they'd encounter abroad.

squidgem · 26/04/2023 06:59

I like Francis, not sure where the idea comes of it being wet. I don't hear it that way at all.
