Frank

Just found out that DC1 is a boy, thrilled as there is a name with great sentimental value that I want to use.
The name is Frank. My DP is on board but has suggested using Francis as the birth certificate option and Frankie whilst young.
Would it be confusing with Francis on the BC but actually calling him Frank/ie
Or should we just register as Frank

Frank is a really normal nickname for Francis and they are both lovely! (I wanted Francis for a boy but DH vetoed it!)

DogInATent · 19/04/2023 13:17

It won't be confusing. Lots of people go by different names in daily life to those on their birth certificate, whether that's a short form, a variation, or something completely different.

You surname isn't Spencer though? That would change things...

Helpustodecidewhich · 19/04/2023 13:18

@DogInATent ha no our surname is not Spencer

It was a popular name in our family but in their cases their full name was Franklin.

Beamur · 19/04/2023 13:25

I know a few teen/early 20's boys called Frank or Frankie ,- I think they are Francis but I think you could use Frank on its own.

nattynoonoo821 · 19/04/2023 13:26

We have a Francis. Known at home as frankie noodle, at nursery as Francis and introduces himself as frank. Enough variations to see him through life x

Belltentdreamer · 19/04/2023 13:26

I like Frank on it’s own. It’s strong enough

onmyknees23 · 19/04/2023 13:26

Just Frank is fine and I think it's nicer than Francis. He will probably naturally become Frankie when little then too. Congratulations

LauderSyme · 19/04/2023 14:11

Frank alone is great. Am not a huge fan of Francis tbh.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 19/04/2023 14:22

DH is Frank, Francis on BC and to MIL.

Helpustodecidewhich · 19/04/2023 15:07

I’m not against using Francis for the BC just wondered if it was confusing or a natural nickname

shoopshoopdedoo · 19/04/2023 16:09

Love Frank. I know a few baby Franks, who are Francis on BC. I think it's definitely a natural nickname.

shoopshoopdedoo · 19/04/2023 16:11

Also, I don't think it's particularly confusing to have a name on BC that is never/rarely used. My brother has never gone by his "proper" name, but parents wanted him to have a more formal option.

EggInANest · 19/04/2023 16:15

Frank and Francis both great, and not remotely confusing.

PickledScrump · 19/04/2023 18:37

Not confusing, but I’d stick with Frank, nice strong name whereas Francis seems feminine to my ears. Although Francis does seem to be incredibly popular currently so there will likely be many in the year group

Hanna86 · 19/04/2023 20:06

Use Frank, its excellent

fairycupcakes · 19/04/2023 20:23

Frank or Francis can both have the nn of Frankie. Go for either, brilliant names! If Frank is the name that is sentimental though then just go for Frank on BC :)

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 19/04/2023 20:24

I would register as Frank and use Frankie as a nickname. I don't like Francis personally but love Frank, it's one of my children's names.

nildesparandum · 19/04/2023 20:40

I had a grandfather and an uncle Francis. One was known Frank The other was known by a name completely different from Frank.I had a great uncle Frank but dntknowif he was officially Francis.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/04/2023 20:58

Not confusing in the slightest. Frank/ie is the most common diminutive of Francis.

Swearwolf · 19/04/2023 21:06

Not confusing at all. We wanted Frankie and went for Franklin as a longer name - could that be an option! He hasn't been frankie since he was tiny, despite our original intentions, always Franklin or Frank. Don't call your boy Francis unless you're prepared for him to prefer it and want to go by Francis, as this might happen.

pancakesandpepsi · 19/04/2023 21:12

Frank is a super name, if it were me I would just register him as that

user1492757084 · 20/04/2023 06:00

Not confusing at all; Francis is the usual full name of someone called Frank or Frankie.
