Help - DH doesn’t like any boys names

Calmondeck · 18/04/2023 13:30

Me again with the same recurring problem 😁 DH doesn’t like any boy’s names - either ‘taken’ (we’re the last of family/friends to have children), ‘good but too boring’ (Thomas, George, William), or ‘too out there’ (Hem, Remy, Sawyer, Rhone)

Keen to hear thoughts on the following (and desperate for suggestions):

  • Heath
  • William (nn Billy)
  • Leeuwin
  • Vincent (nn Van)
  • Rowan
  • Jude

thanks!

You can't go wrong with William. It's a classic that I don't think will ever die out. My next favourite is Heath. I like Jude but has got very popular recently. I'm not a fan of the others

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/04/2023 13:38

I have a Rowan He's 25 now so that's my favourite
Heath is nice too

Calmondeck · 18/04/2023 13:50

Do you think being called Jude in a German speaking country is a problem? Is it like being called Jew or Christian or Muslim in UK? (Though obviously Christian is a recognised boy’s name)

Loving Heath, William and Vincent!

It sounds like you might be after a down to earth sort of name, possibly with a nod to nature like Heath and Rowan. Here are some suggestions that I view as having a feeling of the outdoors.

Parker
Edward "Woody"
Oaks/ Oakes
Samuel
Loxley
Arthur
Jack

baddecisions11 · 18/04/2023 13:52

I love the name heath! Was on my baby name list too. Great name for all ages I think

Theoldwoman · 18/04/2023 13:56

I love William, but not Billy. Will is great though.

Reeve?
Wade?
Ayrton?
Dane?
Gage?
Corbin?
Evan?
Trey?

Haus1234 · 18/04/2023 13:56

If you live in a German speaking country then everyone will pronounce Jude wrong anyway so I definitely wouldn’t use it.

Heath and Rowan are both nice - how about Gabriel (Gabe), Nicholas, Edmund, Matthias?

Rockstars · 18/04/2023 14:03

I like Rowan on your list.
What about Wilfred, Seth or Joseph.

Travelisfun · 18/04/2023 14:04

I love the name Jude!!

KirstenBlest · 18/04/2023 14:22

Heath - ok but how it Th said where you live?
William (nn Billy) - fine
Leeuwin - I think people will think it's made up (it isn't) and the multiple vowels will mean misspellings. Lewin might be easier
Vincent (nn Van) - not keen
Rowan - ok
Jude - not keen

I'd check how each of them sounds when speakers of the local language say them.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 18/04/2023 14:24

Vincent
Heath

SaltyGod · 18/04/2023 14:28

Rather than endlessly suggesting names for him to like / dislike, which gives you all the work and him all the power, why don't you ask him to suggest names he does like.

Then you pick from those. If they're all awful you send him back to think again, as he's done with you.

I believe Jude actually means Jew in the German language.

YouSoundLovely · 18/04/2023 17:38

Jude definitely no good in a German-speaking country. People will either think you called your child Jew or pronounce it in a ham-fisted 'English' way that will sound something like Chute (with a hard 'ch') Unfortunately the pronunciation of most of your other names will be bodged too, to a greater or lesser degree. Vincent is the best in that regard, but you'll probably find it quite difficult to get teachers etc to call him a shortening, especially a seemingly unrelated one.

Rowan is my favourite, all other things being equal, and you should be able to explain the pronunciation, although you'll still get some odd variations.

German boys I know are called Bruno, Darius, Nikolai, Emil, Daniel, Simon (See-mon), Luca, Louis, Johann.

Heinzbakedbeans · 18/04/2023 17:39

Samuel
Timothy
Roman
Marcus

DustyLee123 · 18/04/2023 17:41

RobertaTheRotund · 20/04/2023 06:54

My husband was like this

I will offer you the one name he suggested:

Max

And the only ones I suggested that he liked (other than the one we chose in the end):

Marcus
Sebastian

I wouldn't use Jude in Germany tbh

mumonherphone · 20/04/2023 09:51

I like Rowan and Jude from your list, but wouldn't choose Jude in a German speaking country.

You might like Rohan?

Sunshinesprinkles · 04/07/2023 22:56

Rowan and heath are beautiful names

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/07/2023 23:21

Massive fan of William - timeless with so many great namesakes, nn choices, very international, yet it's slipping down the UK charts and I don't meet as many young ones now. Alexander perhaps has a similar style? Maxim(ilian)? Or maybe Nathaniel if you want something less well used (could use Han as a nn too, which is similar to Hem?)

I also love Heath and Rowan too though - cool nature names (although Rowan is a bit trendy here now and has gone to the girls in Scotland and the US). You might like Ivo which also has nature links?

Less keen on your other choices, sorry (well I don't mind Vincent, but I wonder if he'd get Vinnie which I dislike).
