Isla too common?

Hi,

What are your thoughts on the name Isla? We like it as a possible name but looking at name statistics it seems like it's quite common at the moment which put us off.
Other names we like are Rose, Lucy and Hannah

I much prefer your other options on paper.

Isla is so pretty but for me it’s not the individual name, it’s the bigger swathe of vowel-heavy girl names at the mo. She will be one of a classful of Evie, Isla, Emily, Ava, Ada, Isabelle, Elkie, Alba (I know all of these IRL) etc

Drummend01 · 17/04/2023 15:52

Agreed with above, the classic names you’ve listed are much better

fairycupcakes · 17/04/2023 15:58

I agree with PP. Whilst it’s really very pretty it’s so overdone and will just blend in with all the other names.

of your list I think Lucy would be lovely and fresh to hear. I love the name Rose and I find Hannah really dull.

Nap1983 · 17/04/2023 16:03

It’s a lovely name imo, However it is fairly popular where I am. Nowhere near Olivia, Eva, Ava though.
Lucy is lovely as is Rose (prefer Rosie) Hannah to me is quite dull, I do like Anna though

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 17/04/2023 16:04

No-one can tell you if it's too common or too popular as that is a totally subjective judgement but it is very, very popular. Because it was rarely used before the early 2000s it will become associated with this period in a way that other very popular girls' names, e.g. Olivia or Lily, may not.

FayCarew · 17/04/2023 16:05

It's pretty but it blends into all the vowelly names with just an l in- Lily, Lila, Lola, Ayla, Lola etc
It's been very popular for over10 yrs, and the vowelly name trend will eventually end..

I think your other names will all stand the test of time better.

I know a lot of Islas!

GoodVibesHere · 17/04/2023 16:14

Lucy is lovely. Not on your list but I also really like Louisa. Also Lydia.

giggly · 17/04/2023 16:20

Does it matter? Surely you pick a name you like and who cares if it s common or not. I mean how many Jacks/ Emily’s/ Sophie’s etc are out there.
I cant believe someone called their child Alba, that’s trying way too hard and I say that as a Scottish person.
Pick the name you love not what others call there’s.

Londonlady1423 · 17/04/2023 16:38

Thanks for the feedback, until naming a baby I hadn't thought much about what was popular or common but now that we're thinking of names we like I seem to hear Isla everywhere! I don't mind if it's well known or common but don't want something "trendy" associated with a certain time period. I don't like out there names either and would lean toward more classic names whether they are popular right now or not. I like Lydia also but remains me of TOWIE. Do you know many actual baby Islas or does it just seem popular as it wasn't very common until recently?

AgnesGray · 17/04/2023 16:40

Yes, too common for me. There are a lot of Islas and then there are the Lilahs and Lolas and the rest.

Lucy, Rose and Hannah are better options to me.

WhatHoMarjorie · 17/04/2023 16:44

It's very of the moment and will probably date very quickly. It feels to me as though every third girl I know under the age of 10 is an Isla.

I prefer the other names on your list.

WhatHoMarjorie · 17/04/2023 16:45

Isla is to the 2020s as Lisa was to the 1970s.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/04/2023 16:48

We only have one Rose at the school I work at and it's far less common than your other names. So much better than the predictable Rosie.

AgnesGray · 17/04/2023 16:48

Oh sorry, do I know many - yes, because I work in a school. Now secondary but it used to be primary where it was very common along with Sophia and Olivia

Working in a school do you see many Lucy or Hannah's?

More Hannahs than Lucys IME, but not many of either

uhtredbebbanburg · 17/04/2023 17:00

I have an Isla. We lived abroad when she was born 12 years ago and didn't know any Islas and I thought it was a lovely name. We moved back to Scotland and every other child (and dog!) is an Isla. But that's okay, I still think it's a lovely name and don't regret naming her that.

SBAM · 17/04/2023 17:01

DD is in Year 1. There’s 60 kids in the year, about 30 are girls. Theres two Islas, (plus a Lilah, a Lola, and an alma) and 2 Ava’s.
My DS also has an Isla in his nursery class.

Lucy, Rose and Hannah are all lovely and timeless I think, and I’d pick any of those above Isla (which I do think is a nice name, just a little overused currently).

I know TWO Albas 😄

Pemba · 17/04/2023 17:06

Isla has been very, very popular for a few years now. It's fine, personally I find it a bit nothingy. I much prefer your other selections.

MummyHopeful2 · 17/04/2023 17:38

I think it will be this generation's Gemma or Karen.

FayCarew · 17/04/2023 17:46

@Londonlady1423 , Isla has been in the top 10 names for about 10 years, and Mila/Myla/Lyla/Lila/Lilah/Delilah are getting popular, which sound similar.
Hannah and Lucy are always around, but Hannah was a top 10 name in the 1990s, and Lucy a top 20 name.

If you love Isla, use it, but would you still love it if Isla is in a class with others with the same or similar first names?

toomanysausages · 17/04/2023 17:54

Isla is lovely and I don't know of any irl

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 17/04/2023 18:07

To add to my previous comment of ‘She will be one of a classful of Evie, Isla, Emily, Ava, Ada, Isabelle, Elkie, Alba (I know all of these IRL) etc’…..
Will you look at those parents who used those names despite their popularity and WISH you’d been like them and gone for Isla because you love it so much? If so then there’s your answer.
