Bilingual Spanish/English boy name

Hi! I am expecting my third baby. Both my husband and me are Spanish but we live in the UK. We are struggling with names for the baby. Ideally, we would like a name that is written the same in both English and Spanish and with similar pronunciations in both languages. We have these names in the list: Alex, Lucas and Oliver. What do you think about these names? Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Ricky Martin is an Enrique! Great name, the Spanish equivalent of Henry. Good general knowledge in the UK of how to pronounce thanks to Enrique Iglesias Grin

I've heard of Xavier but not Xabier - I think English speakers would struggle to pronounce it.

My favourite is Pablo. I like Telmo too, it's unusual (in U.K.) but easy to pronounce and spell.

FayCarew · 21/06/2023 09:21

Spanish names:
Carlos
Pablo
Telmo

Fine apart from Telmo

Basque names:
Mikel
Xabier

Not sure how to say them. Mick-el and Zab-yerr?

Xabier will be very hard for English speakers - they usually get the Catalan name Xavier very wrong, and that one is more common.

I really like Mikel, but he may get Michael a lot.

Telmo is nice, especially if you have Basque connections. It's popular in País Vasco from what I've seen.

Good luck!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 27/06/2023 15:21

Paradoxically Xabier might be easier in the UK than Xavier. Xavier has a long-established anglicised pronunciation and the French pronunciation is also widespread. People in the UK are less likely to have encountered Xabier and are less likely to try to apply an anglicised pronunciation.

My Spanish cousins are called Antonio ( Antonitto), Jose and Miguel. They are all easy to say in English.

If you don't mind Ant-own-ee-ow and Hose-Ay. Miguel should be ok.

If you’re open to Basque names I think it might actually be easier as people won’t have a preconception of how to pronounce them.

FayCarew · 27/06/2023 19:20

@LysHastighed , they'll say them as they look.
From looking at them not knowing they were Basque, I'd guess them as And-uh, Ecky, Arritz, Ee-duh, Layn and Lan-duh.

I have no knowledge of Basque other than the name Arantxa, which I think is Arr-antcha.

Laruca · 28/06/2023 17:21

Thanks for the suggestions and opinions!

My husband and me are Basque, so we are considering a Basque name.

Still undecided so ideas are welcome!

I love Telmo.

How about Inigo?

elQuintoConyo · 28/06/2023 17:47

Eneko and Unax are my favourite Basque boys names, two go to my son[s school (we[re in Catalunya)

**apologies, don[t know what[s wrong with my keyboard, my apostrophes seem to have naffed off in the heat!

FayCarew · 28/06/2023 18:01

@elQuintoConyo , how do you say Eneko and Unax? They look nice but I'd guess them as En-eeko and Oonax without knowing they were Basque but I'm quessing En-Eck-oh and OO-nas.
Please correct me.

macrowave · 29/06/2023 00:12

Íñigo would be a terrible choice for a bilingual name! The letter ñ doesn't even exist in English...

Trying to think of some Basque names that would work well in English - how about Julen? I've always liked Ander and Unai, but I think they would both cause some problems.

If all else fails, Jon is a safe bet!

NameChange30 · 29/06/2023 07:22

I know a little Unai, I like the name and I don't think it's too difficult to pronounce or spell.

FayCarew · 29/06/2023 09:15

@macrowave , how do you say the J in a basque name?
I don't think that Iñigo would be problematic, Zoë and such names don't.
I'm not bothered if the non-standard letter in my name gets used or not, as long as they get the letters right otherwise.

The issues are when you have a name that people can't spell or pronounce. Something like Jorge (Spanish) will get George or something a lot, Giorgio (Italian) will get Gee-orgy-ow, Gorgio etc, Jerzy (Polish) Jersey etc

newrubylane · 29/06/2023 09:19

Loads of good suggestions on here. I love Bruno personally. And I know a half-Spanish child called David.

Sssh, we don’t talk about Bruno!

sashh · 29/06/2023 09:39

OP

Depending where you are in the UK people will either learn how to pronounce it or it will be mangled into the local accent.

When I was growing up any Peter was automatically nicknamed Ped or Pedro - no idea why.

I love Mateo. Alex and Lucas are lovely.

I was a supply teacher, I'm sure every name has 3 ways to say it.

FayCarew · 29/06/2023 09:42

Trying to thing of three different ways of saying Alex, Ann, Bob, Tom ... Smile
