In desperate need of inspiration!!

What are your favourite girls' names ending in a consonant/or consonant sound?

Speaking of pedantry, OP clearly isn't coming back but it would have been helpful if she had clarified what she was after. Names ending -er, -ar, -or, e.g Esther, Skylar, Eleanor only end with a consonant sound if you have a rhotic accent. Non-rhotic speakers will pronounce the ending as a schwa.

Just off the top of my head

??? half of these end in an "ee" sound and hannah is an "ah"
Do you not know what a consonant is?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 18/04/2023 09:19

Hannah ends with a consonant letter but not a consonant sound. OP hasn't returned to clarify exactly what she wants so we don't know if it fits her criteria.

Do you?

Vowels are a, e, i, o, u. None of those names end in a vowel. The sound they make might be similar but as pp said, the op hasn’t clarified that. All those names technically end in a consonant

Not the -y names. Y is a vowel when used at the end of a word.

How does anybody cope being this pedantic in real life? I know several women called Harriet and not one has Henrietta as their given name. It’s a common well-used name in its own right, just as Harry is also commonly used as a given name separately to Henry. Perfectly fine to call a baby Harriet, and it does end in a consonant.

Well, that's the thing. I do not believe diminutives/pet forms should be used as given names. I think it is odd to name a child Harry, Bob, Bill, Jack, Jim, Kate, Pippa, Tilly, Jo, etc. They're not real names, just nicknames.

Happy to be corrected on the origin but I maintain that it has been regarded as a name in its own right for a very long time. I have my pedantic moments but dismissing Harriet because it is a diminutive is next level.

Not really. Harriet is the direct female equivalent of Harry, and I wouldn't name a boy Harry either.

No, I think most would agree that 200+ years of use as an established given name in its own right is pretty convincing and that your stance is unusually pedantic.

It is a rare honour and I encourage you to wear the badge with pride Grin

Not the -y names. Y is a vowel when used at the end of a word.

Learn something new every day!
What I was taught is that y acts as a vowel when there is no other vowel in the word.

Quick google suggests that pedants argue this at length!

I do expect that the op meant a consonant sound.
