So children still call plush bears Teddy 🧸?

Viviennemary · 12/04/2023 10:12

Its ok as a nickname but not as a proper name.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 12/04/2023 10:13

I know a Teddy and he's an entitled little shit.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 12/04/2023 10:32

I love the name Teddy and that's all that matters

Thats fair enough. So why post? 😵‍💫

By the time these babies are grown ups there will be people called Beau, Teddy, Flash etc in all sorts of serious jobs (I know real kids with these names). I knew an old man called Ted, it’s not really that out there!

I know a solicitor called Blue, but mumsnetters seem to think that is utterly impossible and a name makes certain jobs off limits 😄

Wow! So your child’s preferences don’t matter? No consideration of giving them any leeway for choice? Maybe he’ll decide to call you a name you hate instead of what you imagine he’ll call you as his mum.

I don’t understand parents without the imagination to see their baby will grow up and maybe have their own preferences. Both the parents who choose a name hating a common nickname for it and the ones determined to give the nickname only.

We gave DD a name with a couple of common, derivative nicknames. We preferred the full name but knew full well she might prefer a derivative and although we always used the proper name when she was little, she decided she preferred a common alternative and of course we adopted it. She didn’t have to change her name officially or any of that, she’s just known to everyone as “Jenny” rather than “Jennifer” [not the name]

There is no guarantee any child will like the name their parents give them. They have to live with it, hopefully for the next 80 years. Unless they change it of course. Mine likes hers but thinks it sounds too posh with her surname. The short version is a lot friendlier.

Teddy is very popular at the moment for babies and has been for dogs for the last decade so it’s not going to frighten the horses and he won’t get teased or anything.

ANY name can get teased!

And a Teddy 🧸 is definitely something little kids will find funny as a name!

NewBabyonboard · 12/04/2023 11:33

I know know a Teddy now 21 never had a problem with bullying he loves his name really suits him

There are more Teddies around now so people won't think anything other than that's his name

It's a great name no different to the popular Charlie's Freddies Archies etc

GO with what you love and ignore the negative comments

It's great xx

So do I, my dog 😂 (love him so much though).

I like Theodore or Edward, OP. Nickname Teddy.

RaraRachael · 12/04/2023 11:40

Nope - it's not a real name. If it's something short for Theodore, then Theo is much better.

I know a 16yo Teddy who absolutely hates his name. OK for a toddler but a grown man?

drpet49 · 12/04/2023 11:40

OconsRazor · 12/04/2023 09:20

Absolutely hate it. It's so cutesy and I would hate to be an adult with such an infantilising name.

I agree

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/04/2023 11:43

You don't care.
But what about whether your child cares.

In my experience I've taught several Teddys and every single one of them has, by the time they were ready to leave primary school, decided they don't want to be called Teddy anymore because it is too 'cute' and young.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 12/04/2023 11:49

I would give them the full name Theodore to give him an option when he's older. I know two Teddys, one a girl (Theodora) and one boy (Theodore), same age - 10. Boy now goes by Theo, girls still uses Teddy.

I like Teddy, but please give him a full name like Theodore, Edward, Edwin so he has options when he's older and might want something more formal.

RuthW · 12/04/2023 12:21

Awful for an adult.

Lcb123 · 12/04/2023 12:22

Cute for baby, weird for an adult. Think about your child as a lawyer with that name

mrstumblet · 12/04/2023 12:27

I know two (both named teddy on BC) one aged 10 loved the name until aged about 7 when he started junior school and other children made the teddy bear references. He now uses his middle name which is a standard one.

Had an elderly neighbour called ted, always presumed his name was Edward until he met the teddy mentioned above and told him his story, turns out he was also a teddy (unusual back then!) but hated the name for the same reasons so always told people his actual name was Edward not teddy.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 12/04/2023 12:27

Loads of baby Teddys and Theos atm. Usually short for Theodore.

24252627a · 12/04/2023 12:41

I have a Teddy. (His birth cert does say Theodore, but we never use it)

When he’s older, I imagine he will use Ted

I also know a Teddy (birth certificate Teddy).

😃

I work with a Romeo, Teddy and Maverick. In another department there is a Phoenix, Cosmic and god knows how many Isabellas. Yes, they're modern names but I don't think people particularly raise an eyebrow anymore. As long as they're competent to do their jobs, that's all that matters to me.

showgirl63 · 12/04/2023 12:52

My Teddy is a very cute poodle! As previously posters have said, too cute for most grown men but ok as a nickname for a young child

Dassams · 12/04/2023 13:03

What's wrong with Romeo or Isabella in particular? Both great normal names

RosaSkye · 12/04/2023 13:18

I wouldn’t find Teddy strange at all on a grown man.

Obviously Teddy Roosevelt was a Theodore but Teddy is closely associated with him and you can’t get much more adult than a president?!

Also think he could use just Ted if wanted.

Don’t think it’d be an issue at school at all

adamsaboutnothing · 12/04/2023 13:21

@Dassams absolutely nothing, just examples of a modern name and a hugely popular name. I don't understand why people get so opinionated over names. I've one daughter who's name is hugely popular now (wasn't when I named her) and one daughter who, even 11 years later, I look at her and wonder if it suits her Confused

HarrietStyles · 12/04/2023 13:48

I have a Teddy ❤️ But as others have suggested, his birth certificate is Edward, which he is also sometimes called, mostly when he is in trouble! As a baby/toddler he was more Teddy, but now he is 10 he is mostly called Ted. As a teenager/adult it will be up to him what he goes by, but has lots of options open to him, which I like.
