Lewin or Levin?

Curious to see what people think…

We’ve shortlisted Lucas, Isaac and Finn but Lewin and Levin keep popping into my head - they feel special in the same way my other kids named did…but that could be the hormones 😆- and I think they’d go well with siblings Cora and Harris.

We talked about Lucan a while ago but I couldn’t get Lord Lucan out of my head.

Lewin is basically a variant of Levin and I also know it as the same Jewish surname, just a different spelling.

We considered Lowen actually. It’s a lovely name.

I haven’t read that Lewin might be considered Jewish. If it’s spelt differently then is it? I can clearly see that Levin is if I look it up.

It's a bit mean to give your child a name where they will spend their whole life explaining how to pronounce it. Use it as a middle name if you must.....

Where in the thread have I said I want to give me child a name they can pronounce? Lewin is pretty clearly Lewis and that’s how I would pronounce it. One commenter suggested it may be pronounced differently but we’re not in Germany. We’re in Scotland.

I went to school with a boy named Lewin and it was pronounced Loo-in. It was definitely supposed to be the Anglo-Saxon name (I won't say what his middle name was but it was a definite theme). I always thought it was a nice name and the spelling/pronunciation didn't confuse anyone in our school (in south west England) anyway. It seems pretty obvious to me.

Of course if I knew someone was German I might think twice, but if I knew they were Scottish it wouldn't occur to me that they'd be more likely to have a German name than an English name.

Thanks @VitaminX. Lewin is definitely on the shortlist. Also Lowen which someone upthread reminded me of. It means joy and this is a much longed for baby. But I love both so let’s see what fits!

I love Lewin! Not heard it before. Sounds quite Welsh. At least, I am imagining it with a Welsh accent!

I have known a few Jewish people with the surname Lewin, so have always assumed it was a variant of Levin. When you look it up online, name banks say that Lewin is either derived from the Jewish name Levin or from the Anglo-Saxon Leowynne (or something like that). So I guess it isn't exclusively Jewish, that's just my experience.

Thank you. I think we’re potentially most interested in Lowen anyway. We liked Rowan but less keen on the meaning. Lowen means joy which I think is fitting!
