By 'work' do you mean are Italian or English names, or pronounced the same in both languages?

What's the name you like?
Will it need to work in Italy? If so then it's less about the pronunciation and more about the vibe.
No child will thank you for Giovanna in this day and age for example- extremely old-fashioned.
Top 10s are published yearly, I think this year it's Leonardo and Greta. (it was Luca/Matteo and Giulia/Sofia for years.

The thing about asking people on a predominately UK-based site for names used elsewhere, or that might work in both places, in that mostly none of us knows what is current in another county. This came across very strongly on the recent thread asking for German names that would work here too. We were suggesting the equivalents of Beryl, Mavis and Janet.

DuchessOfSausage · 05/04/2023 17:32

Giovanni and Giovanna have been old-fashioned for at least 60 years, so they may be due for a comeback.
Like @midsomermurderess pp, we won't know what is current.
The italian people i know are at least 40 years old, so although the names are nice, they are probably a bit dated now.

Exactly this.

I live in Italy and yes, a lot of the bands suggested on these threads are very Mavis/Ermintrude/Enoch-ish. And lots aren't Italian at all! Names are also very regional- Leonardo may be number 1 right now, but in all the years I've been here (29) I've met about 3.

I have one student called Giovanna (Gio) and she is named after her grandmother.

There isn't really the cyclical name thing here that happens in the UK. You're either named after an elderly relative or you're called Alessia. I suppose in 50 years time there'll be lots of elderly Alessias but right now they're all 15. I've got 6 in one class.

Bands= names.

I love Raphaella and Luca

Zitouna · 05/04/2023 19:33

I know an Ilaria which I think is elegant and pretty (Equivalent to Hilary which seems much less glam somehow)

I know a one year old Giovanni who
lives in Milan! Not named after anyone!

I love love love Lucrezia. Unfortunately we would feel a little silly using it for our blonde haired, blue eyed (very English!) little girl.

twosquashedmelons · 06/04/2023 00:20

I lived in Italy a few years ago- the children I knew would now be around 12-14, so I assume their names are current-ish? Their names were:
Emma (multiple Emmas actually)
Benedetta
Alessia
Elisa
Lavinia
Sofia
Ginevra
Bianca
Arianna
Others were Giulia, Chiara, Giorgia, Matilde and Lucrezia, (but might be a pain to spell in the UK) and Elena, Alice, Beatrice and Cecilia, (but pronounced very differently in Italian so again might not be ideal.)

And for boys:
Lorenzo
Alessandro
Tommaso
Matteo
Filippo
Edoardo
Luca
Niccolo
(And Luigi but don't know that it travels that well!)

I absolutely love Raphael, Matteo and Luca, and Raphaella for a girl.

Thatisme · 06/04/2023 04:06

Stella - I wished I called my DD that

Maraudingmarauders · 06/04/2023 04:46

We are using Nicolò for a boy and Caterina for a girl (middle names) as our nod to italian family.
