I am thinking about an appropriate name for my unborn child. Which of the name I have mentioned that you think is the most beautiful?
Any middle names ideas? Thank you!

I never knew that. Had a friend in my first job called it and she (and us) just said it the way I'd say Louisa. Every day's a school day. Going to Google pronunciation now!

I don't know about Italian but in Spanish, to me at least, there's not much difference in the pronunciation of this name. Granted no name is going to be identical given the different accents but there are some like Laura and Julia which have a much greater difference as stress and pronunciation of some letters is much different.

DuchessOfSausage · 04/04/2023 13:33

@TurnLeftAtTheBakery , I think in English Louisa is more Loo-ee-za, and in Spanish Luisa is more Loo-ee-sa.

I like Maura best and it has the benefit of being quite unusual. I know a woman called this, her name was originally Mary, but she changed to Maura as she thought Mary was dull. Her family was English, but had Irish origins I think.

I have to say people repeatedly called her Moira though! I suppose they were not familiar with the name, and couldn't be bothered to listen properly.

Louisa is nice too, but I actually prefer Louise, although some people will say 'dated'.

Not a fan of Letitia, mainly because of the unfortunate short form 'Titty'. Swallows and Amazons I think? I knew a little French girl once with this name and they pronounced it 'lay-teesh-ee-uh' which was nice, but I don't know if it would work in the UK.

I love Letitia, Lettie is lovely too. Not keen on Maura, too close to Maureen, I do love Laura though (strange how one letter can make a difference!!)

So1invictus · 04/04/2023 17:16

Louisa for me.
Maura will be a nightmare for pronunciation. The Italian way is completely different to the English way. (Luisa is slightly different to Louisa but hardly discernible)
Letizia for me is frilly and I don't like the divine spirit connotation.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/04/2023 19:26

Louisa

cptartapp · 04/04/2023 19:48

Louisa.
Don't like the other two either.

MichaelAndEagle · 04/04/2023 19:52

I love the name Louisa so its another tick in that box from me.
Also have heard Laura is making a come back, which I love because that's my name!

ArtichokeAardvark · 04/04/2023 19:56

I went to school with a Letitia - she hated it as it was ALWAYS misspelled. She also ended up as Lettie, which she didn't like as a nickname either.

Louisa is lovely. Maura sounds 'mournful' to me, but perhaps I'm pronouncing it wrong.

HuggingtheHRT · 04/04/2023 20:04

Prefer Louise to Louisa

Don't like Leticia (fussy sounding) or Maura (frumpy sounding)

PinkSyCo · 04/04/2023 20:16

Maura’s ugly. Letitia sounds like a sneeze. Louisa’s acceptable.

It's been misspelled on here despite being in the thread title

WhisperingAutistic · 04/04/2023 20:25

Louisa

Exl · 04/04/2023 20:26

Well not Letitia there would be too many schoolboy jokes about tits.

Both of the others are lovely .

SquigglePigs · 04/04/2023 21:55

I don't like Letitia but the other two are lovely.

I have a real soft spot for Louisa and thing it's very pretty. It's the one I'd go for.

I do like Maura but I think there's real potential for pronunciation issues ("Moira") or being mistaken for Laura.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/04/2023 21:56

Louisa is nice enough (don’t spell is Luisa, she’ll spend her life explaining that)

Letitia is alright

Luella
Lydia
Lowenna
Fernanda
Adela
Maria
Marina
Miranda

Maura is awful (to me) - very mid century vibe but more depressed barmaid than chic.

StopFeckingFaffing · 04/04/2023 21:57

Louisa by a mile

Lavenderlemongrass · 04/04/2023 22:06

What's the difference between Maura and Moira? I'd pronounce them the same.

StopFeckingFaffing · 04/04/2023 22:08

I'd pronounce Moira like Moy-rah
Maura more like Moor-ah

Pemba · 04/04/2023 22:44

Yes Moira = Moy-ra.

But Maura rhymes with Laura, Cora, Dora and Nora.

IceMagic · 04/04/2023 22:52

Louisa

Gillipips · 04/04/2023 22:59

Louisa..but biased..we have a 14 year old Louisa Alice. Didn't come across another one until she started secondary.

Maura and Maura are both English spellings of the Irish name Máire so I don't see why they'd be pronounced differently?
I'd choose either Loiusa or Maura. All I can see is tit in the middle of Letitia sorry

Viviennemary · 05/04/2023 01:19

Not keen on Maura or Letitia. Louisa is quite nice.

I don't know why but they just are. Moira as Moy-ra and Maura rhyming with Laura. I suppose the different spelling indicates the difference. That's how it is said in England anyway. I know that it used to irritate the Maura I knew when people called her Moira, moy-ra.

Perhaps it's different in Ireland?
