Laura, Susannah

I like both of these names quite a lot but I lost a bit of interest in Laura after looking at the top 100 and seeing quite a few popular 2 syllables girls names beginning with L. Susannah I love but a friend said it reminds them of Savannah which has turned me off it a bit.

If I like Laura and Susannah what else might I like? I prefer 1-2 syllables. If the name is long I'd be happy to use it as long as there is a shortening I like just as much, for example I like Susie.

Thanks.

I like Susannah, and also Susanna. Suzanne was very popular when I was at school but is probably out of fashion now and not retro enough for a revival yet, if ever.

Alice?

GabrielAgreste · 28/03/2023 14:28

Yep, just drop the h!

pooroldEnga · 28/03/2023 14:29

I really like Susannah, wish I hadn't heard the Savannah comparison. Can't use Alice but really lovely name.

Susannah and Savannah are honestly totally different. Susanna was the name of Shakespeare's daughter and is a classic name. I'd use that.

pooroldEnga · 28/03/2023 14:46

I love Susannah, do you think it's ok without the h at the end?

OP posts:
pooroldEnga · 28/03/2023 14:47

I should've said better without the h

I love Susanna without the h. Don't see any similarity with Savannah.

Sandysandwich · 28/03/2023 15:03

Laurel

Zuzanna (Zusie)
Katherine (Kate/Kitty)

I like Caroline, Letitia, Elizabeth, Katherine nn Kate, Anna from the above suggestions.

My favourites are still Susannah and Laura.

I don't know why I write it with the h at the end I think I may have read somewhere that it's the 'proper way.'

I love the name Susanna/h, it's gorgeous. So many short forms that can be used eg Susie, Sukie, Zanna etc. It's a name that is classic and has never been overwhelmingly popular, so it cannot be tied to a particular generation imo. Whereas Susan, which is a variation of the same name, was so popular in the 50s and 60s that it is considered an older middle aged woman's name, and will probably take 20 years to come back. I actually like Susan too, but Susannah is more beautiful. As for the 'h' on the end, I can never decide which version I like more, about the same I think. Susanna with no 'h' is the version used in continental Europe I believe, if that makes any difference. I do think that it is better with an 's' in the middle rather than 'z', just looks more pleasing written down imo.

And it has a completely different vibe to Savannah, even though it sounds quite similar. Savannah edges towards tacky (even though one of the late Queen's great grandchildren is Savannah!). Savannah also wouldn't have the same short forms.

I do really like Laura too, it's also classic, but due to a surge of popularity in the 80s, it is a bit more tied to the generation now in their thirties.

You could also go for Anna, Katherine, Emma, Elizabeth, Zoe, Christina, Helen or Helena all pretty classic timeless names.

pooroldEnga · 28/03/2023 15:32

I'm leaning towards Susannah and will do a bit more research about the h. I really like Susie as a nickname for when little too

I love Susanna without out the H. It was the name of Shakespeare's daughter in case you're interested! A classic and timeless name.

Emilyanna · 28/03/2023 15:59

Maura
Morna/Lorna (especially if you have an accent that can pronounce these with the r)

But Laura and Susanna(h) are lovely. Once they are your child's name you won't think of comparisons to other names or other people.

pooroldEnga · 28/03/2023 16:00

I feel reassured about Susanna/h. It's the front runner. Cheers everyone, appreciated. Logging off.

I like Susannah spelt any way and Susie as a nn. The Savannah thing is ridiculous - I would never make the connection.

Forgetaboutme · 28/03/2023 16:02

I know a Susanna and she goes by the nickname Sanna which I also like. I prefer without the H at the end.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/03/2023 16:13

The Savannah connection is hilarious and irrelevant. I love Susanna / Susannah and it feels , to me, very current .

villamariavintrapp · 28/03/2023 16:22

Gloria? Louisa?

miniaturepixieonacid · 28/03/2023 17:43

I really like Susannah but also really like Savannah. I don't see how you can like one without the other, they sound almost identical.

Laura I like but don't think it's as interesting as Susannah.

I think if there is confusion about Susannah/Savannah, they’re not saying it correctly!

Susannah/Susanna is a lovely name, works for children and adults. And there are many shortened versions, all of which can be spelled differently.

I happen to be good friends with esteemed women called Susannah and Susanna, respectively. And they are amongst the very best of women, so I’d go for it so she could be in their illustrious company!
