Alice or Eilidh?

We are expecting our second baby at the end of May. Don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl but we are set on Leo for a boy.

We already have a daughter called Lara.

What do you think of Alice or Eilidh? Hallie was also a contender but DH has gone off it. I like names that won’t be shortened and aren’t too cutesie or frilly.

Alice is beautiful.

It's spare and classic.
It's feminine but strong.
It's a little bit prim but in a bookish knowing kind of way.

Alice is stylish and self contained.

I love Lara too and they go beautifully together.
(But Lara is more open and full of energy)

Allie ? Or Alison with Allie for short might be close enough?

I do lice Alice though. She could also be Allie...

I love Eilidh but I'm not sure I would use it outside Scotland.

celestebellman · 23/03/2023 09:10

Definitely Eilidh - but I'm Scottish so have no issues with pronounciation. That said it's not exactly a difficult name to pronounce when you know how. And if people can manage Niamh and Aoife which are now pretty well known in England I don't see the issue.
Actually I'd be more inclined to use it if not in Scotland as it's probably a bit overused - whereas in England it's still fairly unusual.
Alice is nice enough but there are a few around.

I struggle so much with Irish names when I see them written down but they usually beautiful names when I'm told how they are pronounced and I used to play galiac football so have several Irish friends.

blibblibs · 24/03/2023 07:06

Eilidh every time. And it's not too bad in England, they mostly get used to it after a few goes .

SunsetStrip · 24/03/2023 23:26

@sanityisamyth it's hardly 'taking the piss" it's mildly amusing, get over yourself.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 24/03/2023 23:27

Alice
100%

delshell · 25/03/2023 04:33

If you live in Scotland, definitely Eilidh. It's beautiful.

However, if you don't live in Scotland I think you'll find lots of people will have no idea how to pronounce it!

Not a fan of Alice, personally. I prefer the Welsh spelling, Alys.

Eilidh. It annoys me so much that the UK is so multicultural with so many different names out there compared to 50 years ago, but you still need to hold back on a lovely traditional name because they (English folk primarily) can't be arsed to learn it.

This. Eilidh 100%
Alice = boring.

OnaBegonia · 25/03/2023 07:20

I have an adultDD Eilidh, she was the only one in her school, very rarely had any issues with pronunciation.
The PPs with their 'what now' 'it's just Ellie' comments are rude, there's more to the world than England/London.

RoseFl0wers · 25/03/2023 09:18

I didn’t know how to pronounce ‘Eilidh’ until I googled it. Unless she grows up in a country where this name is common, then you’re setting her up for a life of mispronunciation and she will always be asked how to spell her name and how to pronounce it. I’m mixed race (half English) with a non-white name. My name is unusual but people can still pronounce it phonetically. Most people aren’t familiar with the Gaelic alphabet. I struggle with names like Saoirse (but I know Niamh).

So spell it Aylay. Not that hard!

I initially thought it was pronounced ‘ee-lid’ or ‘el-i-dee’ or ‘eyelid’ before I googled it. Sure, people will probably remember it once they’ve been told, but they’ll more than likely mispronounce it first. Just got to be prepared for that.

cloudyskye · 25/03/2023 15:55

Alice absolutely can be shortened

KEG05 · 25/03/2023 15:59

I LOVE Eilidh. I have one. She’s nearly 13 and has never been called eye lid 😂😂😂😂.
