What are your honest thoughts about the name Inès? What comes to mind when you hear it - what connotations?

I am French but my husband is English, btw. We live in the UK.
It would be pronounced Ee-nez.

Thank you.

I love it

Although in the UK it is usually said In-ess I think, so you’d have to be happy with that.

My first thought to!

Although this was my first thought to (and the Ines on MAFS was vile!) I think it's quite a nice name but I think pronounced In-ess is much nicer than Ee-nez.

I love it, it's gorgeous. Was on my list but DH felt it would be strange to use as we have no French/Spanish/Portuguese ancestry; however sometimes DD's name (Enid) gets misheard as Ines. 😆

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 19/03/2023 17:14

I'm Portuguese so it's a normal name to me, but here in Scotland people would assume it's a boy's name.

8stone13 · 19/03/2023 17:16

Beautiful name

Lostmarblesfinder · 19/03/2023 17:17

The boys name Innes sound different to my ear. Also a lovely name.

Lostmarblesfinder · 19/03/2023 17:18

Really? Hmm
In the latest ONS rankings it's at #449.
Perhaps your area has a very high number of European families? There's a reasonably high number of Europeans where I live (English city) but I haven't come across any other girls called Inès. It's hardly popular across the whole country.

We’re in SW London. Lots of French families and many other European nationalities too, very few completely English families. It’s funny how you get pockets sometimes, when we lived in the states I used to take my eldest to a baby group where 3 out about 10 babies were called Quinn which I thought was the strangest too!

Lostmarblesfinder · 19/03/2023 17:19

Turks don’t know where that came from thank you phone, girls name.

I'm not surprised you're in SW London - that's the only place in the UK I can think of that would have so many girls called Inès!

FlounderingFruitcake · 19/03/2023 18:01

So perhaps my conclusion should be it’s a great name (I do really like it!) but keep in mind that if you live in SW London it’s very possible you’ll get duplicates at nursery/school.

Caledoniablue · 19/03/2023 18:08

I think its a beautiful name. We live in Portugal and its a relatively common ish name here. My best friends daughter is Inês

Rinkydinkydoodle · 19/03/2023 18:12

It’s lovely, so elegant. We have a very stylish friend with a daughter called Ines and she was recently telling me she got asked so many times where the name came from and why she chose it she decided to create an Italian Granny 😆Hopefully you live in a less insular area!

Absolutely love it.

fruitandfibreg · 19/03/2023 18:48

@BernadetteIsMySister my thought too. And she wasn't very nice

Catandcustard · 19/03/2023 18:49

It was on my list but I didn't like the meaning 'pure'. I do think it's lovely though, I'm just not a fan of virtue names.
