My partner and I cannot agree and these are the two names we like the most so far.

Would appreciate opinions/votes.

Sienna

lmnabc · 06/03/2023 13:46

Sienna as I don't know how to pronounce the other!

lovechickencrisps · 06/03/2023 13:49

Sienna as the pp has stated, pronunciation is an issue with Niamh.

strawberry2017 · 06/03/2023 13:53

Sienna

LightHousePanda · 06/03/2023 14:24

I guess it depends where you are as to me Niamh is pretty commonly known. I'm not the best at Gaelic names but that one isn't usually an issue I would have thought - though comments are saying otherwise.

I think both have different vibes. I like both.

FightingFatAt49 · 06/03/2023 14:26

Niamh, much nicer name.
All those saying they don't know how to pronounce it...... if they don't know you tell people how to pronounce it when she's born & job done.

mumonherphone · 06/03/2023 14:27

I would only use Niamh if me or my partner had an Irish connection. I do like it though. And Sienna is also pretty.

Anon2021x · 06/03/2023 14:46

If it makes any difference our daughter is called Isabella and my partner is half Irish - so that's why he's liking Niamh!

If it was Sienna I like the full name Sienna Eloise

Not sure what middle name I'd use for Niamh.

If you live in England good luck with Niamh. Poor child will be explaining her name for forever.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 14:51

You'll get lots of non Irish people pronouncing it as Nee-am Grin

NannyR · 06/03/2023 14:56

Niamh, especially if you have an Irish connection it's a lovely name. I wouldn't have thought there would be much of a problem with pronunciation - it's one of the more more well known Irish names, and if someone doesn't know how to pronounce it, you can tell them, it's short and easy to remember.

LlynTegid · 06/03/2023 14:57

Niamh given heritage.

Ridingfree · 06/03/2023 15:04

A friend of mine spells her daughters name Neve could that be a compromise?

CastleTower · 06/03/2023 15:07

I have a Niamh - she's 3 and I can count the times anyone hasn't been able to pronounce it on one hand. (All involved foreign colleagues of mine who hadn't lived in the UK long - fair enough.) It's been in the top 200 for decades, so everyone knows it now.

No regrets - Niamh is a great name.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 06/03/2023 15:11

I know a Niamh- Goddaughter- and she's lovely and cheeky and everyone's always telling her what a beautiful name it is. So I would go Niamh, but just be aware that no bugger can spell it; we are in London and it doesn't seem to have caught on in the English consciousness in the way that Siobhan or Aoife or Sinead have... so if that bothers you maybe go for the Neave spelling (which is what my Niamh's mum says she would go with now if she have her time again).

pontipinemum · 06/03/2023 15:19

Both are lovely names. But quite different.

If you go with Niamh please don't change the spelling. People might spell it wrong but IMO that's ok. Lots of people spell my name wrong and I hardly ever correct them unless it's important

Anon2021x · 06/03/2023 15:20

I actually didn't realise some people spelt it Neave so that's handy to know. I feel like I would probably go the traditional route if we went with Niamh.

Any middle name suggestions for it? Do you think Niamh Eloise would go?

Looks like it's winning so far.

We are in Hertfordshire.

Eve Síne (sheena)

Not a fan of sienna, so prefer niamh

xJoy · 06/03/2023 15:24

Niamh Eloise is lovely

shoopshoopdedoo · 06/03/2023 15:34

Niamh! Love it. I feel like most people in the UK are familiar with it and would be able to pronounce it. I’m not so Keen on Sienna.

pontipinemum · 06/03/2023 15:35

I think Eloise goes well with Niamh.

If you wanted to continue with Irish, Áine (Awn-Ya) sounds nice with Niamh. I have plenty of Irish family/ Friends living in England and Scotland that have used Irish names and seem to be getting on grand with them. Not Niamh but not well known ones either.

camellia15 · 06/03/2023 15:36

Sienna

Beeeeeeeee · 06/03/2023 15:44

Fabled · 06/03/2023 16:01

Niamh is such a lovely name. Miles better than Sienna.
