Is this a terrible name?

DH and I have just had a huge (lighthearted!) barney about what to call DD, due in summer. I love the name Ophelia and I know she's a tragic Shakespearean character but still love it and would happily use it (although obviously we won't use it as we won't both be in agreement!)

DH is adamant that it's a terrible name and doesn't think that anyone else would feel like me (ie make the connection but still think it's a beautiful name).

Naturally, the only thing for it is to throw it open to mumsnetters Grin

I wouldn’t think about the character at all, would just think it’s a lovely name x

Topseyt123 · 04/03/2023 17:28

I think it is OK, though I wouldn't personally choose it.

PottedSprout · 04/03/2023 17:30

I don't like it OP, sorry. Imagine being like 'Hi, I'm Ophelia', I think I'd live my life feeling like I belong in a romance novel or something. Imagine shouting 'Go Ophelia!' If she ever plays football or any sport. It's just not a name that suits 'everyday' settings IMO.

ArmchairAnarchist2 · 04/03/2023 17:31

I think names are something you should both agree on. Personally I like it but DH should have the power to veto it and vice versa.

desperadodogface · 04/03/2023 17:31

I don't love it or hate it. Just find it a bit meh

angelis0 · 04/03/2023 17:33

I'm with your DH Blush

I agree with this. There are nicer less frilly Shakespeare names I'd use ; Viola, Phoebe, Celia... Juliet....

WinterMusings · 04/03/2023 17:37

it seems popular, so it definitely won't be unusual in her age group.

Personally I don't like it. Not because of the associations, I just think it's pretentious. Though FAR less so when lads are calling out 'oh feel ya'

shortenings Oaf/fee/feeder/Ilya

NeverHadANickname · 04/03/2023 17:37

I like it and would use it.

YomAsalYomBasal · 04/03/2023 17:48

I love it, but I didnt use it because all I could hear was the old joke "Ophelia boobs" Blush

DilemmaDelilah · 04/03/2023 17:57

I think it's a great name. Nuff said.

RuthW · 04/03/2023 17:58

Lovely but very popular at the moment.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2023 18:01

Your DH is right.

A name that includes the syllables Feel Ya isn't a nice name, and the Shakespeare bit doesn't matter. You don't see that many kids named Bassanio or Cunobeline knocking around.

Oh god - I’d never heard that one, but now I have I can’t unhear it! 😲 ☹️ On that basis I wouldn’t OP. Lots of other lovely Shakespearean names.

MrsBunnyEars · 04/03/2023 18:04

The little one I know is always called Phe, which is quite cute.

Afraid I’ve always thought her parents are very pretentious (not just because of this!).

Reinventinganna · 04/03/2023 18:05

I really love it. I know two born already this year

Mittens1717 · 04/03/2023 18:08

Agree with your DH, just no

RedPandaFluff · 04/03/2023 18:22

Thanks everyone!

It's a definite no from me.

BiffChipsandKippers · 04/03/2023 18:26

It's not for me, but it's a perfectly fine name.

ReadersD1gest · 04/03/2023 18:26

It's not terrible, but I don't like it 😬

Meandfour · 04/03/2023 18:27

It’s awful. Prepare for “I’ll feel ya” when she’s a teen.

ClaraThePigeon · 04/03/2023 18:27

I love it. It's beautiful and not pretentious imo.

AllOfThemWitches · 04/03/2023 18:27

I know an Ophelia, lovely name and she doesn't get called 'I feel ya...'

Aquamarine1029 · 04/03/2023 18:28

It doesn't matter what we think. Your husband doesn't like it so it's out of contention.
