Do you think of Elliot as classless? And do you like it? Be kind -my brain is fried!

@barca123 where I am it seemed to have a major popularity surge a while ago. There is loads from 10ish to 20s but it’s trailing off now. It seems of that age range

fruitandfibreg · 03/03/2023 22:15

I know 3 Elliot's-
a weed smoking skater
a dentist
A 2 year old

I love it

Reddahlias · 03/03/2023 22:26

Op, why on earth do you care do much about so called 'class'???

And why do you disregard names that you deem 'to posh'?!

Why are you so obsessed about this?

Gosh, confrontational! I just wanted a name that transcended so called class connotations really! I’ve always felt self conscious about Henry being a bit posh and wanted something middle of the road

Henry is definitely not too posh. Elliott is a lovely name.

They both span all classes, IMO. If that is important to you, you're on the mark.

Go for it!

angeltattoo · 03/03/2023 22:44

And by that I mean I wouldn't make any assumptions or bat an eye lid about either name. Which to me is classless as I think you meant it.

That’s what I meant - thanks!

I don’t think Elliot is what you’re after, in which case. I’d say you’d be looking at James, Daniel, Samuel, Nicholas, Benjamin, Alexander, George.

Hmm yes they just don’t delight me!

Isn't it the person that determines their 'class' (however defined) rather than their name?

FakeBilly · 03/03/2023 23:06

barca123 · 03/03/2023 22:04

In what way?

There are WC Jameses, MC Jameses, UC Jameses. Elliot skews lower edge of the middle classes, and WC.

StopFeckingFaffing · 03/03/2023 23:06

I don't particularly associate Elliot with a particular social class, to me it has a similar vibe to Ethan, Lewis, Max etc

I don't think it's as timeless or classic as Henry though and not names I would expect to he siblings

I would expect Henry's brother to be Alexander, James or George

JennyDarlingRIP · 03/03/2023 23:09

I think a lot of very MC posters are saying it's WC. I grew up in the East end of London, way before gentrification, very WC family and community. Not a single Elliott. Jack, Dean, John/Jonathan, Bill/y, Jamie, Tony, Darren, Steve, Tommy, Pete (rarely Peter), Warren, Lee, Ricky, even the odd Gary. Now all have sons called things like Charlie, Archie, Jordan, Jayden, Ronnie, Frankie.
We live in a different area now and DS goes to a MN approved Montessori nursery and his classmates are Noah, Jasper, Cassius, James, Henry, Theodore (Theo never Teddy).

I'd definitely put Ethan /Lewis in WC/ LMC too though

(Not that I think one class is better than another, just that as someone from a v solidly MC background that would be my assumption on hearing the names)

I like Elliott. With 2 ts. I don't think it is particularly posh sounding at all. What about Ellis as a similar but maybe updated alternative?

Agreed, @SweetSakura.

Mammyloveswine · 03/03/2023 23:30

I mean I teach in a proper working class/salt of the earth area and have never taught an Elliot... id say it was more common in the more middle class areas...

JungleBoobies · 03/03/2023 23:32

It makes me think of a film I love (E.T.) and ET saying “Ellllliiiiottt”. Nice name!

Hmm. I have known four Elliotts.

One must now be in his mid 90s. Quite an upper class chap. Consultant surgeon.

Two are about 65 and both Jewish.

One is 26 and has a brother with a very mc name that has latterly become well used.

There were a couole at DS's London Day School.

I don't see it as a class associated name but I do see it as a name chosen by those who are entrepreneurial/self made who can more than hold their own with MC/UC.

How on earth are any babies names lower middle class or working class? Jesus Wept! Mumsnet is batshit!

It's just what people associate with a name. What's difficult to understand?
