Maurice vs Atticus vs Wilbur

These are the top three options and I’m interested to hear some thoughts because I’m a bit torn.

Maurice- My personal favorite honestly, but I asked my mother and sister about it and they weren’t big fans. I like the idea of a nickname being Marcy. Reminds me of the novel by E.M Forster.

Atticus- I love the name kit but feel it would be too short as a first name and it could be a nickname for Atticus.

Wilbur- A variation on William as I find it’s quite popular, however, we already have a Winnifred and not sure if they’re too similar being w names. There’s the possibility of being a Will or Bertie, and also Wilby which I think is quite cute.

Also open to similar classic, a bit old-fashioned style name suggestions!

Winnifred and Wilbur sound cute.
Maurice is my pick but I also like Wilbur.
Atticus seems has a different vibe.

I have heard of one nick name for Maurice. Morry
Do you like Moet?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 25/02/2023 02:06

No on Wilbur. Sounds too cartoonish.

minipie · 25/02/2023 02:11

Not keen on any of these three tbh. What about

Gregory
Fergus
Dashiell
Sebastian
Dominic
Lawrence
Conrad
Miles

Bearfriend · 25/02/2023 02:28

Good to hear another person keen on Maurice and Morry is very cute too.

Like Sebastian and Lawrence!

Sebastian - definitely!

DoughnutDreams · 25/02/2023 03:33

Wilbur and Winnie is cute!
Atticus is Link's name on Grey's anatomy, I think a current character but pretty cool!

PortiasBiscuit · 25/02/2023 03:35

You are naming a human being, not a pet rat.

Twoinapod · 25/02/2023 05:11

Not a fan of Maurice, and I’ve only ever known Marcy to be a girls name.

I love Atticus, it’s a very different vibe from Winnie though. I think Atty or Tic is the more commonly used nn for it. Kit is a commonly used nn for Christopher if you wanted to use that.

Wilbur I don’t like and it is a bit too matchy with Winnie.

I love Atticus, probably because of Atticus Finch out of To Kill a Mockingbird. I've never heard it used in real life but it's a great name. I'm not keen on your other choices though, sorry.

Judgyjudgy · 25/02/2023 05:48

All hideous. Sound like animals from Charlotte's Web

TheAustralian · 25/02/2023 05:54

Wilbur - It’s so cute. Love it.
Maurice - also love
atticus - too common.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/02/2023 06:07

I like Maurice best. The traditional pet form is Moss.

It's a nice name, but EM Forster's Maurice has a fairly troubled life. Although I suppose he wouldn't now.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/02/2023 06:21

They are all characters from books and that is the first association I made.

I really like Maurice and it can be shortend to Reece. Wilbur is always going to be a pigs name to me and I think its cute for a toddler but a bit limp for an adult.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2023 06:35

Maurice. Could be Moss as a nn.

EarringsandLipstick · 25/02/2023 06:47

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2023 06:35

Maurice. Could be Moss as a nn.

In Ireland, Maurice would become Mossy 😄

I'm not a fan of any of these names, they don't sound like names you'd use for a child at all ... but it's obviously personal preference.

Merrow · 25/02/2023 07:08

Winnie and Wilbur is a popular children's book series, not sure if that would bother you? Wilbur is the cat in it.

I like Atticus and Sebastian. I always thought Seb was a pretty cool nickname. I think if you want to call them Kit you'd need to go with Christopher though.

OntarioBagnet · 25/02/2023 07:23

My dad was a Maurice. Never met another one. No nickname used. Would certainly be unusual for a child. I like Moss as a nn.

I like Atticus.

OntarioBagnet · 25/02/2023 07:24

How about Jonty?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/02/2023 07:39

Not keen on any of them. I never understand the idea of looking for a cute name for a child. A name is for life. Names that sound cute for a tiny baby may be a burden for an adult.

The obvious name for a child you want to call Kit day by day is Christopher. Or just call him Kit.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2023 07:58

I know one Maurice and he is always Maurice (Morris not Mo-reece) AFAIK, but I can think of a Morris who gets his name shortened. I prefer the Morris spelling, but both are OK. I don't like Reece.

Theraffarian · 25/02/2023 07:58

This may be my age but immediate thoughts,

Maurice , space cowboy, gangster of love
Wilbur , The pig from Charlottes Web
Atticus , Finch , the only one I sort of like

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2023 07:59

Atticus is too To Kill a Mockingbird, and Wilbur is sort of retro cute but seems more of a name for a pet pig.

Albaniarocks · 25/02/2023 08:01

I know a couple of Maurices. One is "Morris" and the other "Mo-rees" pronunciation but they both have the nickname Mo.

HamFrancisco · 25/02/2023 08:11

Morris is a bit dithery old man in a cardigan and Maurice (emphasis on the second syllable) is very camp indeed. I love Moss as a standalone name. Marcy from Maurice? What about starting at Marcel?

I can’t separate Wilbur from the pig I’m afraid.

Atticus is Islington try hard. Kit is fine.
