Longer versions of Alice and Dora

I love Dora and Alice but my partner prefers longer more unusual names. We have decided that we can both get what we want by choosing a longer version of the names I like.

For Dora we have
Dorathy
Dorathea
Theodora
Teodora

DP says these are all too normal other than Dorothea, but we know a little Dorothea who goes by Thea so would want to avoid that one.

For Alice we have

Alicia - Horrible girl I went to schools with name
Althea- can't make my mind up on it.

Any others?

I believe Alice is derived from Adelaide. Suppose that's longer and more unusual.

For Alice.. Alisa is a mid European version I think

Amadora. It's Spanish or Portuguese I believe. I think it's lovely. The name turns up in some of the later 'Poldark' books.

Medora is also a name from literature.

There's nothing wrong with just Dora of course.

Theodora (was at school with one, they called her Theo though, wouldn't happen nowadays)
Dorothea (you have to have the 2 'O' s really)
Pandora (too 'Adrian Mole' maybe?)

Dorathy - Dorothy is nice but I wouldn't shorten it to Dora
Dorathea - Don't like the thea bit
Theodora - Don't like it at all and Theodore is too popular
Teodora - looks wrong.
Not keen on Dora anyway.

Alicia - Aleesha/Alissia pronunciations and misspellings
Althea- can't make my mind up on it. - can't see how you get Alice from it

I'd go with Alicia with the Alissia pronunciation, but suggest that you find one name that you both like, probaby not Alice or Dora.
Alice is really nice and doesn't need lengthening.

Isidora. My DD's name. From Italo Calvino's book Invisible Cities. Known as Dora. Really suits her. It's a no nonsense name.

How about Elenora ?

If you know a little Dorothea who goes by Thea but you want yours to be known as Dora, does it matter that on the birth certificate they have the same name? There will be no confusion if they're known differently.

What about Dorelia? It's an alternative to Dora but longer and more unusual but also not crazy long.

I like Dorothea and Theodora. I prefer the first which seems to shorten to Dora more naturally but the latter an obvious alternative.

The suggestion of Elenora above is nice but doesn't shorten to Dora naturally. But Nora is a nice name too.

Alice I wouldn't use as a shortening really. The obvious longer version might be Alicia but you don't like that and I don't think it's as nice sounding as Alice is. Alyssa?

I know three little Dorothy's and they are all called Dot or Dottie. Not Dora.

If you like the names Dora and Alice then call baby Dora or Alice.

I’d be arguing for those names as they are, they’re easy to write and pronounce. Why burden a kid with a long name that will it seems you’d shorten anyway

Dora from the cartoon is derived from Exploradora. I don't recommend that.

As for Alice, only one I can think of is Alicia pronounced A-Lee-cee-uh. But I prefer simply Alice. Or go old school and use Mary Alice.

There is an Adelicia in one of the Chalet School books but Alice is lovely on its own. I prefer Dorothy to all the alternatives ( including Dora the Explorer).
