Feedback on names

What do people think of the following names? We can't decide. Any other suggestions?

Boys names are fine, apart from Ellis - is that a name? Finley sounds like a surname (though not in a bad way). I do know hundreds of Fins though, so maybe a bit overdone unless you would always call him by his full name?
LOVE Freya and Ella. Millie isn't a name - it's a cute (though again, very overdone) abbreviation for Emily or Amelia, so fine as long as you give them the proper name. Amelie sounds great but i have a feeling the reception classes in a couple of years time will be bursting with them - seems a very popular baby name of the moment. Also, personally I'm not over keen on foreign names unless you have a French connection. Isla is lovely. Darcey makes me think of Mr Darcy or that ballerina!

George or Freddie. Louis was middle-class Kevin of 1990s, Zach too contrivedly zany, Finley too modish, Ellis is a surname.

Ella or Isla. There will be at least three other Millies in her class, ditto Emily which sounds very like Amelie, Darcey - see Ellis.

Millie is a name - im naming DD Millie in 9 weeks time lots of names are now names that used to be shortened - i dont like Amelie, i like Millie iyswim?

Zachary is nice; is my dss name, really lovely. DS1 goes to school with an Ellis - its ok but a bit surnamey for me

All of your names are lovely actually - Isla is getting more popular.

See i dont know another Millie, neither doesm y friend and its a small town. But others on here say its v popualar, i guess its to do with whats common in your area and if you mind them being the second in their class.

I like all the girls names except for Darcey, it's unusual which I like, nothing worse than being the 7th Laura in your class, but it sounds a bit masculine for me so I wouldn't use it myself, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't!

There are always so many pretty names for girls but boys are always a pain! I don't mind George and Ellis, but it doesn't spark for me, iykwim. I love Finley, and Zachary but I think they are both becoming quite common, I love names you can shorten though so either of those are my favourites, probably Fin. I don't like Frederick at all, just because I think it's a bit of an older man's name, although you could shorten it to Freddie when he's little and that would be a lovely name for a child.

These things are always so personal though, I see some names on here I wouldn't contemplate in a million years but others really adore, you shouldn't let our comments sway you if you've found the perfect name.

I like Ellis and Zachary from your boys names (and have known a couple of people with first name Ellis, but none with surname!).

From your girls I like all except Amelie. I particularly like Darcey, if you have the courage to go with it.

Absolutely - it's your decision - but as a teacher I do come across some fairly horrendous names!!
As a rule of thumb I would always give your child a 'proper' name, even if you want to abbreviate it for everyday use. A lot of shortened names - freddie, teddy, milly, tilly etc sound cute for a 6 month old baby, but when they're a 30 something professional they might prefer to have a fall back.

I agree alfie, nothing worse than giving your child an already abreviated name, when they're older they'll feel like a right prat. I had the exact same argument with a group of friends of mine but they all think it's fine to do it, I just can't agree. I love long names that can be shortened, it's so much more sophisticated, should they want to use it in later life.

Louis would be pronounced Lou-ee. Is it really middle class equivalent of Kevin?

So many London boys of about 10 called Lou-ee. I always thought it sounded a bit effete as well.

George, Louis and Frederick are LOVELY.

Ellis and Finley - definitely not. Zachary is ok but agree only do it if you really like Zac as no-one, once he gets to school, will ever call him Zachary.

Ella - don't think it's very pretty
Millie - is NOT a name, it's a shortening - and very much for little girls only - one day your little girl will grow up!
Freya - lovely
Amelie - lovely (and you get 'millie' as part of the package!)
Isla - lovely
Darcey - s'ok but don't think it's that pretty

My millie is the only millie in the whole school!

I know a 30 odd year old millie and a 60 odd year old millie ...neither of which seem strange so i totally disagree that it is for 'little girls' only.

scorpio...I have come across a fair few MIllies over the [ast few years...sometimes they were shortened from Ameilia, other times Millie is the nmae (to me it brings the image of a cow...as, Millie is a cows name in germany, just as daisy or buttercup are over here, iykwim)

People are opinionated about names.

It's just one of those things. I agree people should use whatever name they like but if you are going to use a diminutive as a name then you have to accept that some people will pick up on that. I think it can be annoying - have a friend who called their son Jamie and who gets really irate about cards, etc arriving for 'James'. But I do think it's something that WILL happen when you are going against the accepted usage of a traditional name; doesn't mean you should not do it of course but you can't have it both ways!

And personally I had far rather talk to someone with strong opinions than someone without!

I do love opinionated people, as I said, but yes I agree opinionated in-laws are a challenge all of their own......

well i think asking other people about yourm kids names is a bit thick.
